For those that still want the texture of holding a book to read, I highly recommend the San Francisco Public Library. The computer system has united all branches with the Main Library so users can request an item, whether that be book, CD or DVD, to the their local branch for pick up. One can renew online too. Once satisfied,... More

The building was inaugurated by former Mayor Willie Brown. It clearly had a big budget and few expenses were spared maybe except for the plain, unimaginative exterior (as opposed to beaux arts. The problem is that the building has been completely taken over by homeless drifters and junkies. In politically correct San Francisco, no progressive thinking liberal could ever impose... More

A great piece of contemporary architecture in the midst of the Beaux Arts civic center. Asian Art Museum next door and regular farmers markets in UN Plaza.

There is no reason to visit the library. It's not like Boston or NY. The only thing to really see here is the overwhelming amount of homeless people in and around this building. Do not use the bathroom in the basement.

I loved libraries, until I came to this one. Why doesn't anyone eliminated disruptive, loud and crazy people from entering library?

The SF public library system (including the main branch in Civic Center) has a great collection of materials across media types, is free for SF locals and visitors and allows you to return items to the nearest branch, regardless of where they were checked out. That said, and this is probably a reflection of SF's larger issues with public services... More

Staying in Civic Center

Neighborhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
