The library is a gem. Great selection, great website.Super, except for the filthy homeless who "live" in the bathrooms and stacks.

I love the Library and want it to flourish. The children's library is magical. My only complaint is that the bathrooms are often filthy and smell disgusting.

Most of the libraries have been renovated and some (like Richmond) have adjacent renovated playgrounds as well. Lots of events, exhibits, and activities for all ages take place throughout the system. Main library is the biggest and has the most events/activities. There's a monthly newsletter that is informative and interesting to read. And the big library book sales are infamous.

As a long time resident of San Francisco, I have come to cherish my city and the diversity it represents. Each neighborhood has it's own cultural and or ethnic flavor, and each of the San Francisco Public Library Branches reflect what is unique about the neighborhood in which it lies. For example the North Beach Branch has an amazing collection... More

Anyone interested in architecture will find this building of interest. It is modern & designed to mimic the Beaux Arts building in the Civic Center. The day it was opened to replace the former Beaux Art library building next door it was already inadequate for what it was designed for.

One of the most beautiful libraries i ever been to. Staff is very knowledge and helpful and they have tons of nice and quiet rooms where you can sit and read. Also a nice patio on the top floor and one of the most beautiful collection of small books and older books that you can see by appt. The bad... More

I've had a library card since I was 6 and I use to live right down the street from the one in my neighborhood. It was my earliest way of escaping into my imagination. I read Black Beauty the summer I was seven. I would come home with armloads of books. I read fairy tales, Nancy Drew mysteries and Helen... More

The Library has many events that are free to the public. I recently attended a lecture on "Les Troyens" that was outstanding. Lecturer/composer Dr. Timothy Flynn had flown from Michigan to discuss this little performed magnificent opera. The SF Opera Guild sponsors these lectures before the opening of many of its productions. I have also attended several screenings of movies... More

Staying in Civic Center

Neighborhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
