We were glad to have taken BART to the show (Book of Mormon), as the station is directly in front of the theater. We arrived a bit early, and took a quick walk to the Civic Center-- but only because it was still light out, as the area is pretty sketchy. Our seats were way up in the balcony, but... More

Lousiest customer service you will find anywhere. Nobody replies to emails at all. If you're lucky enough to actually get someone to pick up the phone, they seem to be able to offer no help whatsoever. Further, they don't seem to care at all and even act annoyed that they have to be talking to you because of a mistake... More

You need to use public transportation to get to this theater. If you choose to walk, you will have to walk through a gauntlet of aggressive panhandlers, open drug use from smoking substances to injecting substances. Also, the streets and sidewalks are covered in garbage, human feces and urine.

I've been to this theatre many times, and it's never disappointed. High quality entertainment in a charming, vintage building. Be cautious in the neighborhood around the place, as it's in sharp contrast to what you have inside the building.

Dame Edna's show is the funniest we've ever seen, and we've seen some of funniest comedians. The best part was that she had me come onstage and made me part of her second act. The Orpheum is very nice with comfortable seats.

It's always inspiring to be in a large room full of people, all focussed on a great performance, especially in an historic building, full of history.

When we saw that Newsies was on the docket for our plays this year, I was not very excited- I was wrong. This was extremely well done with excellent music and dancing. The Orpheun is such a wonderful old theatre - we always enjoy looking at the architecture. Go see Newsies!

We went to see Kinky Boots in this ornate grande-dame of a theater. The seating is superb. Feels intimate. Wonderful acoustics. And, of course, the truly fabulous part of theaters such as this one and the Paramount in Oakland is soaking in the architecture, carvings and decor. It didn't hurt that the performance was vibrant and fun.

Turns out we showed up for the Kinky Boots performance a day late. My mistake. BooHoo. Yet, the will-call lady encouraged us to stand by for last minute cancellations. None. Then, her manager and she arranged, as if it were by magic, for us to see the show from Row B, seats 1 and 3…. that is right up front,... More

Staying in Civic Center

Neighborhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
