Saw the matinee on 8-22-15. Having seen the original production in NewYork and San Francisco several times I was very disappointed. The staging is flat. The sets ominous. My favorite scenes in the Phantom's lair and Chrisine's dressing room were changed leaving out mystery and romance. A wide door in the dressing room mirror for entry to the Phantom's dungeon---really!... More

Saw this play in early August 2015. It takes a while to catch on to the British accents and there sure seemed to be a lot of screeching dialogue, especially from the mother. The man playing Miss Trunchbull is a hoot. The theatre is cool and old fashioned, but seats have no legroom. You have to stand to let others... More

Beautiful theater and an amazing show. What more could you ask for? Parking is always an adventure in SF so plan your time accordingly.

Just saw Matilda here..we've come here many times via BART, very convenient; theatre is very nice and clean; surrounding area not Times Square though and places to eat nearby is scarce;but don't let that stop you from seeing a show here

My husband and I saw Matilda here, and were thoroughly impressed with both the theater itself and the performance. A bit pricy ($85 each for orchestra or mezzanine seating on a Sunday night, which was the least expensive we looked at), but money well spent. The neighborhood itself surrounding the theater didn't seem to offer much. We ate at Sam's... More

Living in NYC it is rare I see a traveling show of a Broadway show that I’ve already seen on Broadway. However this was a wonderful experience. Yes it was a fundraiser so I am sure the crowd was a little more “ready” to be entertained by Kinky Boots but the Beauty of this Vintage theatre will not change from... More

Saw Matilda, a hit musical with touring company. I had seen the original in London in 2012. The production was poor compared to my previous experience. But the theater is every bit as nice as other large stage theaters on Broadway or elsewhere.

This is a well-cared-for and well-appointed landmark in a somewhat iffy neighborhood. Security folks look cold but are pleasant -- just don't ask them to take your photo. They're not permitted. The indoors folks will tell you why there are more ladies restrooms than men's--the architect apparently was a woman -- and you will need an elevator or to take... More

Watched a few musicals (Wicked, Les Miserables, etc) here! But parking's bit hard to find (as with most places with SF)

It's an old theater showing most Broadway traveling shows.... Nice old interior. But of couse like many old theathers seats are small and can be un comfortable. Bathrooms are weirdly located on the basement. But if you come and see a show...... Just come and enjoy......

Staying in Civic Center

Neighborhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
