We attended The Barber of Sevilla. Great performances by the artists and very creative set-up. The building as beautiful as impressive. Most importantly, the staff (mostly volunteers I was told) was smiling and helpful. Although a formal attire is recommended, patrons dressed casually are receiving the same warm welcome. This opera house maked our experience smooth, nice and easy, from... More

This is definitely top-tier and unsurpassed in the artistic quality. We travel from out-of-state to attend every year, and it is well worth it. They have been doing a great job with innovative productions and finding great voices, many of whom are relatively young but have reached the top level of singing.

This is the second round of this production. First was a few years ago. It is fabulous. Such good music and great new scenery and on-stage modern elements. Sung in English with English super titles. Purists will cringe that it is not sung in German, but they need to get over it! The opera was, after all, designed for local... More

My husband and I got married in Sonoma in September of 2014 and we eloped, so we thought it would be fun to do something unique on our wedding night. So, we went to the Symphony. The San Francisco Symphony is incredible. We bought the cheap seats that are typically reserved for the choir if there is one, but there... More

I have attended a performance of the San Francisco Opera House yearly for the last few years, on a Saturday evening. This opera company attracts world-class singers. I saw Renee Fleming sing Lucrezia Borgia with them a couple of years ago. We usually make a special evening of it: dress semi-formally, have dinner at one of the excellent restaurants in... More

First, the Opera House is absolutely gorgeous! We saw The Marriage of Figaro. It was excellent! The singing, acting, scenery, and costumes were all wonderful!

Enjoyed the grandeur of the opera via comp tix from my friend. Recommend reading up on the story before going so you can understand what is going on. If you have never experienced opera, take advantage of the SF Opera. There aren't too many California cities which can boast an Opera company of their own.

As an opera lover from Maryland, I am more familiar with the Kennedy Center, which is an elegant but fairly modern-style opera house. So, I absolutely loved the classical aesthetic of the San Francisco Opera House, which has a beauty evoking old world style. I attended with an experienced opera-goer, and we both loved the production of "The Marriage of... More

The San Francisco Opera is one of America's oldest and finest opera companies. While they have performances for much of the year, it is particularly attractive in June when they do a festival of three operas in repertory featuring some of the world's greatest singers.

Very beautiful opera house with good acoustics and very helpful staff. A cafe in the opera house serves a very good buffet before the performances (check for details as not all performances may have the buffet). Only recommendation for them would be to better advertise available parking and advance purchase parking.

Staying in Civic Center

Neighborhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
