Permanent collection, plus current shows highlighting everything from comic book artists, to animation art and political cartoons. Third Thursday's are free at night, and some Sunday's there is a children's story time. Look for interactive events for kids.

A great alternative to shopping and the more touristy destinations, this is a great place to take a break from the crowds and learn how vital an art form cartoons are. The museum has classics (Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts, Flintstones) as well as a lot of cutting edge cartoons (Skull Bunnies anyone?). Seeing them in these forms and at these... More

It had a great exhibit on the Secret of Kells, a favorite animated movie and quite a selection of political cartoons--a great visual museum of an art form not often enough celebrated.

A really fascinating little museum with changing exhibitions. The current one about political cartoons in daily newspapers is really brilliant! The mix is just perfect and allows the visitor to enjoy art, laugh but will also give some food for thought. Highly recommended!

The seriousness of all the museums that San Francisco has to offer, the Cartoon Art Museum brings a little levity and education all rolled into one. A must see if you enjoy all things cartoon.

My son and I usually look for something off the beaten path. This little museum fit the bill. They had a nice display of cartoon art dating back to the late 1800's through current Ninja Turtle lore. There was a special display of political cartoons, and all the oldies. (Nancy, Sluggo, Beetle Bailey, etc) We enjoyed the museum and the... More

It is a nice exhibit but I felt really short changed on this. Maybe because I've been to similar places that were cheaper or even free. Oh well...

It is more of a comic strip museum, but did have some comics. A great TMNT display when I was there. Brilliant historical display of newspaper comics. Generally American focused, but to be expected. Would love to see more comic books and more cartoon stuff, maybe movie stills etc. Definitely worth a visit if you like comics and an hour... More

A bit off the beaten path, but definitely worth visiting, especially if you enjoy art in the form of cartoon and movie animation character sketches.Enjoyable for all ages with art from every generation. Lots of places to sit and just soak in at the artwork.

Staying in SoMa

Neighborhood Profile
SoMa
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighborhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighborhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
