The seriousness of all the museums that San Francisco has to offer, the Cartoon Art Museum brings a little levity and education all rolled into one. A must see if you enjoy all things cartoon.

My son and I usually look for something off the beaten path. This little museum fit the bill. They had a nice display of cartoon art dating back to the late 1800's through current Ninja Turtle lore. There was a special display of political cartoons, and all the oldies. (Nancy, Sluggo, Beetle Bailey, etc) We enjoyed the museum and the... More

It is a nice exhibit but I felt really short changed on this. Maybe because I've been to similar places that were cheaper or even free. Oh well...

It is more of a comic strip museum, but did have some comics. A great TMNT display when I was there. Brilliant historical display of newspaper comics. Generally American focused, but to be expected. Would love to see more comic books and more cartoon stuff, maybe movie stills etc. Definitely worth a visit if you like comics and an hour... More

A bit off the beaten path, but definitely worth visiting, especially if you enjoy art in the form of cartoon and movie animation character sketches.Enjoyable for all ages with art from every generation. Lots of places to sit and just soak in at the artwork.

A smallish museum with a combination of four static and changing exhibition spaces. The static displays illustrate the history of cartoon and illustrations from the early C20th to the modern day, with some real gems within the collection such as a Schultz Peanuts drawing. Worth a visit to idle the time in between the bigger attractions of San Francisco for... More

The museum is a bit small but that isn't really a problem. All the exhibits are very interesting. Also, they're amusing enough to take you away from reality for at least an hour. And the museum's little comic & souvenirs shop sells nice and not so expensive gifts. It's worth visiting it.

Does not offer a ton of stuff but the exhibits are pretty genuine and interesting. The book store offers some unique and pertinent items and the staff is friendly.

Came upon this place while waiting for my husband to get done with a meeting. Took me about two hours to walk through the museum and also enjoy the gift shop. Small fee to get into the museum, but the gallery was very informative.

Staying in SoMa

Neighborhood Profile
SoMa
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighborhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighborhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
