We took the Hop On/Hop Off City sightseeing bus down to Pier 39. On a clear, bright, sunny day, the view of the bay, the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge were spectacular. The highlight was watching the sea lions pushing, playing and barking back and forth. Did not bother to check out the shops or the restaurants.

You must go down to Pier 39 if you visit San Francisco. There are lots of bars and restaurants and you can see the seals basking in the sunshine. You can catch a cable car down to the harbour and walk along taking in all the sights.

Pier 39 is sometimes denigrated as a commercial tourist trap but I loved it the first time I visited from the UK and can definitely confirm that by my third visit. It is vibrant and busy with a great selection of shops. Yes, some sell tourist souvenirs but there are many others that have unique items. The setting is also... More

We went to see the Sea Lions. Pleasantly surprised to find they have a docent at the dock that can answer your questions and educate you on the subject. Beware the surrounding area is very "touristy".

Many restaurants and attractions including street performances and a great view to the bay including seals (visible: Golden gate bridge, Alcatraz, etc.)

It is what it is and it's worth doing once. Very crowded and expensive but worth it to just people watch.

Went with a visiting friend to this supposedly top San Francisco attraction. The place was jam-packed with tourists making the rounds of T-shirt & cheap trinket shops (almost all with identical merchandise) and sea-food chowder joints. I would definitely be wary of pickpockets at the rate one is jostled about. I got so turned off I took my friend to... More
