Don't expect too much

A definite must see but don't over think it. Enjoy the ferry ride across the bay, take the audio tour and spend some time seeing the gardens. Not an all day trip.

Do this, and delve into the history past it being a federal prison. Try and time it to take one of the garden tours as these give you a whole new insight into the islands history and uses over the years. Definitely worth a visit, take a jacket as if the wind gets up its cold! The audio-tour is worthwhile.... More

This was a fascinating your. From the moment we stepped off the boat and listened to one of the guides informing us of little known facts regarding Alcatraz' beginnings we knew we were in a profoundly moving place. The audio tour was narrated by former guard, complete with eerie sound effects. The condition of the main prison appeared unchanged from... More

Great if you book the trip that lands on ALCATRAZ and take you on a tour there. First of all, you will be explore great views on the boat on your way to ALCATRAZ by getting a great look on SF from the boat. secondly, don't miss out the opportunity of going on the upper floor on the boat to... A visit to San Fransisco would have to include a trip to Alcatraz. The audio tour of the prison is outstanding. Make sure you book well in advance, we had booked 2 weeks ahead & only just managed to get tickets. Also dress as warmly as you can. It's freezing on the island, very cold wind!

We did the Alcatraz tour while visiting San Francisco last week. I recommend any potential visitors make time to do the audio tour. It is very thought-provoking when you see the prison cells and hear the story as you view different parts of the prison. The boat ride out and back is very enjoyable and lots of photo opportunities. Dont... More

I spent three weeks travelling around California and Alcatraz was certainly a highlight in the 'things to see and do' category. We did the early bird tour and were impressed by the engaging and well thought out the audio guide. It was wonderful to hear the voices and accounts of those who had worked and had been incarcerated in the... More

The audio tour was very well done and you learn a ton while being walked through the facility. I would highly recommend it!

Alcatraz was a well put together tour! I was a bit worried when everyone lined up for the ferry ride I expected a uncomfortable, overcrowded tour. But the way they had it set up was genius. When u get on the island you're free to do whatever. Of course most people opted straight for the audio tour but its an... More

My husband and I took our 10 year old on the night tour and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It cost us just over $100 for our tickets but I frankly felt that it was money well spent. The ferry ride over is great with fantastic views of San Francisco and surrounding areas. Although we dressed in warm jackets and long... More
