You would need to book well in advance if you want to see this destination. The audio tour line up was long after 3 pm but the tour was very well narrated and well done! Completely felt immersed in the experience! Lots to learn about how the ideology of treating prisoners changed over time. The $30 from tickets are for... More

Wasn't sure about visiting an old prison cell given there is so much to do in SF and so little time. We nearly missed our tour, but were able to get on last minute. So, boarding was easy. The ride to the island was quick and relaxing. We had a bright and sunny day. If you have any handicap, crutches,... More

Book this tour several weeks in advance to get your choice of times and days. The tour normally sells out and no wonder! You start with a great ferry ride with great views of Fisherman's Wharf and Alcatraz. So many great photo ops! Seeing Alcatraz up close is amazing. The self-guided audio tour gives you a lot of details and... More

I live in San Francisco, and agree this is a must-do for anyone visiting the city. The ferry ride to the island is quite nice, and the island itself (and the tour) are fascinating. This is a good experience for children and adults.

Ok, so it's an old, abandoned prison. And ??? It does have amazing views from around the island, but it's really just an old, abandoned prison. The Park Service could do so much more with it. There aren't many interpretive signs, and our volunteer guide was awful. What a waste of 90 minutes - he showed us photos of the... More

This is a must-do if you're spending a few days in San Francisco! Book tickets online in advance if you can (you can select the tour time that works best for you). We chose a morning tour to avoid the crowds, and by the time we departed the island around 12, it was really getting crowded. The check-in and boarding... More

Everyone should go there once in their life, I think. Honestly, it's the first time in my life that I visited a former penitentiary, and parts of the audio tour were just a wee bit creepy. But it is a part of history, and we all enjoyed it. There was even some pretty good bird watching out there. Plan for... More

If you have seen some movies (e.g.: Escape from Alcatraz, Clint E.) you even feel how real this was; good audio guide!

I didnt want to go, my wife made me! Having been cajoled into it I was all ready ot be all grumpy and dismissive, but this was one of the best places I have ever been to. Go in the morning and get on the first trip and make sure you do the audio tour. It is amazing how well... More

If you are planning a trip to Alcatraz, I would recommend reserving your tickets online. Depending on the day, you may have to wait in line for stand by tickets. The boat ride out to the island is less than 15 minutes. Take the time to sit outside on the boat and take some pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge... More
