Was lucky enough to have some great weather for my visit, which allowed for spending alot of time in the sun enjoying the views. Probably worth giving the Rock a watch before you visit!

Alcatraz is a very interesting place to visit. It's a 15 minute ferry ride to the island with views of the Golden Gate Bridge along the way. The island is very hilly, but for those not able to walk to the top a tram is available. My husband and I walked up the paths to the main entry and went... More

Ok, it's touristy. While visiting SF with my teenage daughter, who had never been here, I knew it should be on our list of must-do things. I purchased tickets online a few weeks in advance. This is the best idea since these tours sell out every day. If possible try to go on the very first one of the day-8:45... More

Very nice with a short boat trip to the island in a sunny day. It is a fairly short walk up the hill if you are in normal shape. The audio tour through the cells was too slow with two kids, aged five and eight. The boat trip also gives great views of the town.

One off the bucket list. How can you possibly go to s.f and not go to alcatraz??????? Answer.... you can't. Like other reviews have said, you really do have to book before you even get to s.f. (we booked direct - reccomended) There is a stand by queue but we didn't see it move!!!! The audio guide was very informative... More

I've taken the night tour of Alcatraz on two different occasions. It's really a great site to visit and I highly recommend it. I would also suggest reading a little bit about it's history once it became a prison and also about some of the infamous inmates that were there. That will make it more interesting. You will see where... More

We went over on an early morning crossing to avoid the crowds. The rangers talk were informative and really th helped to set the scene. We were lucky with the weather and had a great view of the golden gate bridge. Well worth a visit, but wear sensible footwear as there is plenty of walking.

Unsurprisingly, this place gets busier through the day, so if you can get out on the first trip, do so. Also, you do need to book tickets well in advance. There is no food available on Alcatraz so take some snacks as it takes a few hours at least to enjoy the full experience.

We took the night tour which a lot of people recommends. There is a tram available especially for those peole who find it difficult to climb for there is 3 section that has to climb a steep no steps till you reach the prison cell itself. The tour is similar to Eastern Penitentiary in Philadelphia. It has audio tour and... More
