Best audio tour I've ever experienced; definitely a highlight of our visit to San Francisco; loved the views travelling to and from the island; we booked our tickets well in advance online and enjoyed the early morning boat road out to Alcatraz; lastly my swollen ankles welcomed the option to take the travel buggy up the hill to the jail.

The history of the rock is fascinating. I recommend taking all the tours. I love the boat ride over too because its affords a great view of the city. Enjoy!

Book in advance as tickets sell out months in advance. The island is amazing. The history is evident in the walls and the audio tour is a must. If your in San Francisco and don't visit Alcatraz you will be doing yourself a disservice.

We took the tour early at 7:15 a.m. and our guide Arturo was 10 minutes early and made us feel completely at home (even though we were not!) We went through the quiet streets to our drop off for the Alcatraz tour. Recommend you go first thing as it gets busy during the day and this way you're first on... More

Book at least two weeks in advance for this busy attraction. Its well worth it. We spent a good 3 hours looking around. The views of the city and the golden gate bridge are amazing from the boat. The cellblock tour is really interesting and detailed. Would highly recommend

This is a must-do for any person traveling to San Francisco. Don't put off getting tickets as even though the island itself is more or less self-guided, the tickets for the ferry to take you there only have so many available and time slots sell out quickly. A short film made by the Discovery Channel is a great intro, and... More

This is an absolute must!!! If you only do 1 thing in San Francisco, make this it. You need to book in advance as it is very busy all the time. The commentary was great and such an interesting place to wander around.

So much history on such a small piece of land. I never knew it was a military facility first. Or that the prison "only" lasted for 29 years. Make sure you plan this trip way before you actually go. The boats leave every 30 mins and they are loaded. Have fun!!
