This is a great tour. Half the beauty of the tour is the boat ride out there where you get great views of the city, alcatraz, both bridges, sausalito, etc. Then once you get on the island you get an audio headset that gives you info on the history of the jail and the inmates that lived there. So glad we took this trip. The boat ride only took 15mins and you come back when you are ready. A bit of a steep climb up to the cellhouse but worth it if for nothing else but the fab view over to the Bay. The tour is by audio headphones and is easy to follow and really really interesting.... more

Spouse and I visited in Sept, 2009. The most incorrigible inmates. Many inmate suicides because of the harsh rules. Why spend a vacation visiting a place with a history of violence and human depravity? Depressing place with a grim past. the views of San Fran can be thoroughly enjoyed from elsewhere. more

We weren't going to do the Alcatraz tour but on the last day of our visit someone said it was so great we decided we would go. It was a great tour and we really are glad we went. It is a steep hill you have to walk up but it was worth it. more

Alcatraz is well worth a visit and very good value for money. The audio tour is fascinating - largely down to the fact that it contains real life testimony from former prisoners and staff. Alcatraz Island is well worth a visit, we both found it a really interesting tour and wish we had spent longer there. The only tip I would pass is that the climb from the ferry landing point to the main tour area is a steep climb so I would suggest some decent shoes, aart from that enjoy the tour. more

Generally not a pleasant way to spend an evening on vacation -- unless you're going to Alcatraz. I had been once before on a day tour, but found the evening tour far more enjoyable.
