You go by boat from San Francisco to Alcatraz. This famous old jail is now a museum. You can feel the sadness of the atmosphere.

Long after I left Alcatraz, this art exhibit stayed with me and made me think more about the fight for freedom worldwide. This is more than just a visual experience - it includes sights, sounds, poetry and imagination beyond words. I highly recommend this trip before it leaves Alcatraz - you will not regret it, and what better location for... More

The ride there was extremely cold, but we went in January. :) We especially loved the Weiwei exhibit! We would love to take our girls the next time we visit San Francisco. I would recommend wearing comfortable shoes as some areas are hilly. Bring a warm jacket too. The headsets are genius, as one can walk as slowly or as... More

The first time i visited years ago I bypassed the recorded tour... my 11 year old wanted to do it so I went ahead and was so glad i did.. i enjoyed it so much more than the first time because of the audio tour! Tickets sell out months in advance but I was able to find some on craigslist... More

I didn't really know much about Alcatraz before I went there, but it was worth the trip. I found the audio tour through the cells the most interesting, and I gave me a real understanding of what Alcatraz was and what it was like to be there.

I came here 16 years ago and missed out as I had not pre-booked. This is a very good way to spend a couple of hours. Really interesting to see how the prisoners lived and the audio tour is a real bonus. There are a lot of extra bits, e.g. art exhibit, that are not really relevant, so the whole... More

For our 2+2 family (children 14 and 11) this was the highlight of our stay in San Francisco. Checked out availability on the website and you need to book at least a month in advance (for August). It is possible to go out on the day but have to join the standby queue and no guarantees. No doubt availability out... More

This was our 2nd trip to Alcatraz and it was just as cool as our first trip! It is a must if you have never been!

The Eye Wei Wei exhibition was on, which was very thought provoking and should not be missed. The audio talk on the prison was pitched just about right and added to the atmosphere of such a dismal place. Really glad we went. If in SF, do go, but book early.
