No smelly, dirty bus here! The Island Explorer bus is a convenient way to bypass traffic at Acadia National Park. Service is limited to the Western side of the island, but it is very nice on the Eastern. The Village Green in Bar Harbor is the bus hub. There are formal stops but the bus will also pick and or... The bus is great for visiting the town and the park during the busy tourist season. Because of this free shuttle, you really have no need for a car. The buses are comfortable, clean, and run frequently so we never had to wait more than 10-15 to catch one.

Some of the buses had maintenance issues, but you can't argue with the price. I appreciate that LL Bean sponsors these.

great way to avoid dealing with your car in a very busy area. Very simple system so there's really no excuse to be confused.

Mountain biking the carriage roads to Jordan Pond is a great way to get exercise and enjoy a picnic by Jordan Pond and then a Popover in the dining room.

We had biked one of the carriage roads most of the day. It got hot and I was tired so my friend kept riding and I took the bus back to Bar Harbor. The driver was nice and helpful getting my bike on the rack in front of the bus. It was nice to have this free service. They will... More

My family camped in Acadia. We used the bus on several occasions to get to different locations within the park and to Bar Harbor. It was GREAT! They even transport bicycles. There is also no cost to use the service. There is a box for donations that help to defray the cost. We loved that we could get around without... More

This is a wonderful set up; why anyone would be crazy enough to try to drive to certain places on Mt Desert Island and have to park (i.e. in Bar Harbor itself unless your hotel is there or to Jordan Pond anytime after 10 AM where there is little parking) is beyond me. We are avoiding hassle, allowing my husband... More

First, the Explorer Bus gets a five for existing and running on time and for getting you where you want to go and bringing you back. Second, the Explorer Bus gets a five because the drivers were courteous and helpful, especially on the bike shuttle. That driver gave us tips about the carriage roads and how to find our way... More
