Definitely worth 15 minutes of your time. I guarantee that 99% of the tourist visitors and even many locals do not even know this place exists. Just south of the Mala Boat Ramp off of Front St. Check out the public beach just outside of the Mission grounds. Good snorkel beach protected by coral and volcanic reef. Easy parking.

This was a quick side trip for us this year as been there before; the huge Buddha is impressive, especially the first time you see it. If you are in Lahaina, take time to visit the Jodo Mission.

Really wanted to visit and made 3 attempts. Closed off for some sort of political event, which I found very odd as it is a mission. Only reason I knew it was political is when I was turning around, I could hear a woman announcing "say hello to your new Governor of Hawaii". Came back two times in next 2... More

Honestly, I just wanted to see the giant buddha...and was delivered! =) You could easily drive past this place, so GPS it. Bonus: creepy sand graveyard next door...

The mission is on the beach off a side road from Front street. It is closed to the public so is not easy to see. The beach area there is great. Nice sandy area and not crowded at all. There are public restrooms, but not much more.

The Lahaina Jodo Mission has the largest Buddha outside Japan. There is a temple on site which conducts services but is not open to the public; however, you can view the interior from the steps. Interesting site to see.

Lovely small facility that we found while looking for a snorkel spot close to Lahaina since we were off the Star Princess and had time after whale watching. Also good snorkeling on the beach next to it. We were surprised to find this large buddah and mission,

Loved the giant statue of Buddha! Such serene surroundings! When we visited only one section of the temple was open, but it still was beautiful!

It may have just been my false image that caused the disappointment. Based on reviews I was expecting a larger facility. The buildings and buddah were pretty, but it only took about 2 minutes to see all of it.

It was pouring rain on a Maui and we were looking for something different to do. I had hoped by visiting this Buddhist mission that there would be a place to "sit" and meditate but no such luck, however the giant Buddha (the largest of its kind outside of Japan) looked down on us so serenely that I was "quieted"...
