If you travel on Front Street north from the main shopping area, you will find this amazing mission. Donations are accepted. When we visited, there was no one else there, so it was a great chance to see it well. This is said to be the largest Buddha outside Japan. Besides the Buddha, there was a temple that was closed... Right on the ocean about a 15 minute walk from the harbour, this was a beautiful place away from the crowds. Large Buddha statue and two other temple buildings which commemorate the Japanese immigrants who went to Maui to work on sugar plantations. Across the street was an old cemetery built on the beach/sand dunes, but not used anymore as... More

Like a christian church in Manhattan, the Jodo Mission provides solitude and peace. It is beautiful. The statue of the Buddha and the temple itself are art objects, graceful and lovely. There is easy parking, public access to a beach and a cemetery (very natural with drifting sand) on the same short road off Front Street. Whether you are religious... More

Definitely worth 15 minutes of your time. I guarantee that 99% of the tourist visitors and even many locals do not even know this place exists. Just south of the Mala Boat Ramp off of Front St. Check out the public beach just outside of the Mission grounds. Good snorkel beach protected by coral and volcanic reef. Easy parking.

This was a quick side trip for us this year as been there before; the huge Buddha is impressive, especially the first time you see it. If you are in Lahaina, take time to visit the Jodo Mission.

Really wanted to visit and made 3 attempts. Closed off for some sort of political event, which I found very odd as it is a mission. Only reason I knew it was political is when I was turning around, I could hear a woman announcing "say hello to your new Governor of Hawaii". Came back two times in next 2... More

Honestly, I just wanted to see the giant buddha...and was delivered! =) You could easily drive past this place, so GPS it. Bonus: creepy sand graveyard next door...

The mission is on the beach off a side road from Front street. It is closed to the public so is not easy to see. The beach area there is great. Nice sandy area and not crowded at all. There are public restrooms, but not much more.

The Lahaina Jodo Mission has the largest Buddha outside Japan. There is a temple on site which conducts services but is not open to the public; however, you can view the interior from the steps. Interesting site to see.

Lovely small facility that we found while looking for a snorkel spot close to Lahaina since we were off the Star Princess and had time after whale watching. Also good snorkeling on the beach next to it. We were surprised to find this large buddah and mission,
