Top of my list of things to do in Maui, was to go out in an outrigger canoe. This is far beyond my expectations! First, it's about the fishpond and the work to restore it. I learned about Hawaiian culture and history. It was a deeply moving few hours; I hope others can have this quiet adventure.

Our guide, Vene, is a Native Hawaiian Cultural Practitioner. For ten years he has been in charge of the task of rebuilding the Ko`ie`ie Fishpond. He started our tour with a deeply moving Hawaiian chant. . . asking the sea creatures permission to enter their home. As we paddled the double hull (12 man) canoe from the fishpond into the... More

This was an excellent adventure. The paddle out was not too far, there was good information given out, and they did not try to sell anything... Just beware of getting in and out of the canoe. Larger people or those with disabilities may find that aspect of the adventure troublesome.

My husband and I happened upon this site in the local rag. We booked easily the night before, excited to learn more about Hawaiian culture and the ancient fish pond/farm reconstruction. We were fulfilled. The hosts were gracious, informed, and passionate about aloha: compassion. The focus is to pass along through community service the ancient Hawaiian practice of revering the... My husband and I really enjoyed our fishpond tour and paddle. What a unique experience to paddle in an outrigger canoe. Learning about the fishpond restoration project and how it is changing the lives and becoming a motivation for the volunteers who are working on it is really inspirational. An opportunity to get out on the water with these young... More

On several occasions, I watched people in outrigger canoes at the Lanikai beach. This was finally my chance to go out and it was fun. We got a little information about the fish ponds and about Hawaiian culture, but most of the time was just paddling. We surfed some waves in and also paddled into some waves going out. We... More

This was an amazing opportunity to learn about Hawaiian culture and learn about how fish ponds played a key role. Being in the canoe was fantastic and had wonderful views of the Maui coast. We also had an up close encounter with a green sea turtle. Lastly our two guides were performers in the amazing Maui performance Ulalena which we... More

Truly a great experience! This is a morning excursion, and it works by providing a donation to this non-profit organization, which focuses on preservation of Hawaiian culture thru preservation of the fishpond ("revitalizing a wall, revitalizing a culture"). Our family of four adults (not teens, but certainly appropriate) met our guide on the beach by the fishpond at 8 am,... More

A donation ($ amount determined by Fishpond ) per person is made through PayPal prior to booking. The best $ you will spend on Maui as it all goes to a good cause! A maximum of 5 people can go out on the outrigger canoe with the guide. I highly recommend this activity! Skip the luau and do this!

Want to learn a bit about Hawaiian culture AND paddle an outrigger canoe (no experience necessary)? This activity is for you. We first learned a bit about how ancient Hawaiians corralled and nurtured ocean fish here in what is an original fish farm! Then our guide, Kimokeo Kapahulehua, showed us the work this organization is doing to restore the lava... More
