The title says it all, if you're in Mau and enjoy horseback riding the sunset tour at Makena stables is a must-do. The ride starts out at ocean level near La Perouse Bay and heads uphill from there through the lava field to an old lava vent. The tour is on private property, so you get to see some sights... More

Most interesting terrain our family has ever ridden on horseback. Our guides were very professional and the views of South Maui were spectacular, especially from the break spot on the volcano crater. Horses are well cared for. More

My husband and I had read an article in the Orlando Sentinel describing Mckena Stables and the great time the writer had there. We decided to try it when we were in Maui a couple of weeks ago and are we glad we did. These are not your average trail horses or your average guides. We made our arrangements with... More

4.5 Stars - My family & I did the Makena Stable's Sunset tour & we had a terrific time. Christine was our guide/safety instructor. She was knowledgeable, very attentive to everyone's needs and safety. We trekked thru parts of the picturesque La Perouse Bay and up the rugged & contrasting landscapes of the Ulupalakua ranch to see the beautiful sunset.... More

We had the "luck" to get to ride at Makena stables twice on our recent trip to Maui. The first time, we had a private sunset tour booked, which was cut short less than an hour in, because of a thunder storm! They reimbursed us part of our money, and we were able to rebook a group tour (which was... More

This is small operation but that is what makes it special. The four people that work there are horse lovers first and business people second. The owner's moto - "I work hard so my horses can have a better life". Isn't that great? The only disadvantages I found was that there is no office person there so I suggest when... More

My mom and I discovered the newly opened Makena Stables by a brochure in the Maui Airport. It was close to our hotel in Wailea, and offered a 2 hr ride that fit our schedule perfectly. We were picked up by a shuttle at our hotel and were taken to Makena Ranch (about a 10 minute ride from Wailea). When... More

This is a must and definitely worth the money. Our ride lasted over 4 hrs. They take you along the desolate beach area and then up the mountain and through the volcano fields. You take a break at the top which gives you a great view of of the Maui sunset. The horses are only used once a day (at... More

A rewarding 2-1/2 trail ride only a short distance from the major Wailea resorts on the coast (Four Seasons, Hilton, Marriott, Maui Prince, etc.). Groups are small, which aids in hearing the guide discuss the landscape and wildlife (our group was 4, including the guide). Trails provide access through private ranch land and conservation areas; scenery is beautiful. We went... More
