This is phenomenal canyon - one would not expect to see such a canyon similar to Grand Canyon on Kauai island, HI. Seriously, when we first saw it we were flabbergasted as to the immensity of this gorgeous view. Go see it, it's worth the drive. In fact we discovered it when driving to the end of the road to... It was well worth the drive to see the Grand Canyon of Hawaii. The views were spectacular. Waimea Canyon is not be be missed while in Kauai.

Long drive from Princeville. Long winded road going upwards. Unfortunately for us it was rainy and cloudy so we were unable to see the Naapali coast. We went to one spot and could not see the canyons through the thick clouds. We were about to leave and somebody told us to stick around because the clouds can clear quickly and... More

We stayed in Poipu for two weeks and made several trips up to Waimea Canyon, including two hiking trips. While this side of the island tends to be dry, check the weather first because once you get up into the canyon, you're likely to encounter more weather. We did the Awa'awapuhi Trail, which starts at about 4,100' and descends to... More

Worth setting aside at least a half a day to view the canyons---bring your camera and a jacket---gets chilly at the top viewing areas as the day goes on--plenty of rest stops and bathrooms!

The Waimea Canyon drive was scenic but I would recommend timing your visit towards the late afternoon when the sunlight brings out the colors more dramatically then earlier in the day. I enjoyed more the drive to the very end of the road. The mountain was shrouded in clouds but we waited long enough for sunlight to break through on... More

Worth the drive, as long as the weather cooperates. It was sunny and clear when we went and the views were awesome. Stop at the viewpoints for amazing scenery and waterfalls. Keep driving to the end of the road for a view of the Napali Coast. Bring your own snacks and drinks as there is nowhere to pick things up... More

We made it up the windy road and once at the lookout point enjoyed the beautiful views immensely...I took my 14 and 17 years old kids and although they hated the drive and the time it took they really enjoyed the views, had "fun" and took tons of pictures. It was crazy to see the helicopters flying through the area... More

Ignore the tip that recommends not driving to the end. We've driven to the end 3 years in a row in November. The first time was later in the day and, indeed, it was too foggy to see the view. The view on our other trips has been awesome. It's the view of the Na Pali coast you see on... More

The road was very winding so it was rough on those in our party who suffer from motion sickness. But even they agree that the view was well worth the discomfort. The sign for the lookout was placed at a fork in the road with no arrow indicating which way to go! We chose the wrong direction the first time... More
