Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this outstanding garden, known for its diverse collection of tropical plants. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants. « less

We toured both the Allerton and McBryde Gardens on a recent trip to Kauai and were thrilled with both. Our tour guide was helpful and informative and really knew his trees! Since we are horticulturists, it was nice to have someone so knowledgeable as we had a lot of questions about trees that we have not encountered before. The gardens... More

We visited McBryde garden on a very hot and humid day and it was quite a difficult unescorted tour. The garden is beautiful but be ready for a lot of walking so bring plenty of water. You may prefer to wander around this very interesting place but I need more structure. This was very different from the Allerton Garden tour, which... More

We just stopped by and were enjoying the gardens when thankfully one of the volunteers told us these were just the teasers. The main garden takes a short bus ride and offeres either a self or guided tour. We did the self guided and can hardly wait to go back next year. This is one of those places you can... More

I was "talked into" going to this attraction on our fifth visit to Kauai. I thought I would be bored to tears, but I was very, very wrong. After a nice, informative trip via shuttle to the garden area, we were left to walk around on our own. We spent about 1.5 hours in the garden and would have stayed... More

Due to prior commitments, we were able to only spend about an hour and half in the garden. This time needs to be included in addition to the 30 minute shuttle ride to and from the garden. This may seem somewhat unattractive. However, the ride is pleasant in that the drivers are knowledgeable on the drive recommending the highlights of... More

The McBride and Allerton gardens are accessed at the same entry. A few days earlier, we'd toured the Allerton Gardens, but didn't have time to tour McBride. We returned, but since the bus only runs on the hour, we had a lengthy wait before the tour. Actually, the hour waiting on the bus is easily spent in the gift shop,... More

If you want to see Hawaiian trees and flowers, this garden is wonderful. Reservations needed as tram takes you from visitor center to garden trail, and picks you up.

My husband went in to buy all the tickets. The woman was very rude and asked him where was the rest of his party. He said waiting outside and then she frowned at him. The driver and his company were extremely nice and knowledgeable. It was a self-guided tour and it was okay, not a lot of plants and a... More

This is definitely not a manicured botanical garden with water displays and butterfly houses. This is a natural space where tropical plants are preserved, protected, and studied. There is significant science and research happening here. The tour starts on a bus, and the guides were enthusiastic about the gardens and the work there. Sterling and Star were the guides, and... This was a highlight of 10 days on-island. I have mobility challenges and use a cane most of the time. I purchased trekking poles (practicing prior to trip) and they really made the difference; that and a good pair of shoes. It should be noted that the National Tropical Botanical Gardens is a not-for-profit run organization and NOT part of... More
