NTBG’s McBryde Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this outstanding garden, known for its diverse collection of tropical plants. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

We enjoyed the self guided walk at McBryde garden. As the shuttle bus took us to the starting point of the garden, our driver gave us some background about how it came to be. We had purchased some guides to Hawaiian birds and plants in the gift shop which helped to identify some of the trees and flowers. For New... More

This is a sprawling, beautiful place. We love plants and birds, and got both. The garden display is not neatly manicured nor meticulously labeled like other botanical gardens in the world. It didn't matter to us. We considered it a "working garden", rather than a showpiece. The tour of the grounds is self-guided. However, the bus driver who took us... More

This is a great place to start to learn! Gorgeous, lush greenery with several trails to follow to learn more about the evolving plant life in Kauai. We (husband and I) took the self-guided tour in the McBryde Gardens this time, but have also taken the Allerton Garden guided tour which focused less on the plants and more on the... More

I make it a point to visit the garden when in Kauai. Self guided. Easy strolling. Can be hot, so bring a hat and mosquito repellant. Lots to see. One of my favorite spots.

I'm struggling a bit with this review as I have been to lots of botanical gardens all over the world and loved them all. But this one.......hmmmmm. I agree with another reviewer that I think the name conjures up a different expectation to what it actually is. I would call McBryde gardens a plant museum like Otari Plant Museum in... More

I love nature. I love going for a walk in nature. And I thoroughly enjoy spending time with my family in nature. Heck, I’m from Scandinavia, where nature is pretty much an integral part of daily life. Paying $90 for a walk in McBryde Garden – basically a large, walled-in park which has given itself the audaciously ambitious title, "National... More

We did three botanical gardens while on Kaua'i -- McBryde, Allerton, and Limahuli (up north). Of the three, I have to say McBryde was our least favorite. We did the morning self-guided tour (9:30am). You get shuttled in, with some amazing views along the way. The return shuttles run on the hour. It had rained overnight, so things were pretty... More

i don't really consider this a garden in a traditional sense. it's a big property used for researching various plants. it was interesting, but a disappointment. it's also pretty expensive.

An interesting take on gardens...but do not go expecting lush tropical displsys a la Singapore or Kirstenbosch. This is largely a collection of research gardens established in a lovely valley with a pretty stream running through it. Best to plan your visit using the guide advice and/or the detailed map as there are five distinct areas to visit. Though it... More

One of the things that amazes me so much about botanical gardens is how unique they all seem to be, yet how beautiful, and how directed so many seem to be in some direction, like preservation of native species, or research. It might be noted that my party did two adjacent gardens in one afternoon/evening. You might wish to see... More
