NTBG’s McBryde Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this outstanding garden, known for its diverse collection of tropical plants. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

During a recent visit to Kaua’i I was fortunate to visit all three of the island’s National Tropical Botanical Gardens. I loved each one for individual reasons. The McBryde Garden is located “adjacent” to the Allerton Garden. Allerton Garden is situated on the lower Lawa’i Valley and is accessible by guided tour only (not to be missed!) McBryde offers self-guided... More

Being the garden with the most examples of native plants, it is in dire need of help to maintain everything.

This is primarily a research garden. It is on the same property as the Allerton Garden which is more decorative. The plants should have more labels if the purpose is educational.

McBryde Garden is a great place to visit for an educational walk through lovely grounds. The tram takes you down into a quiet arboretum where conservation and preserving the species, and understanding where the different plants came from, is your experience. Bring your camera!

We wanted a formal garden self-guided tour and this was not the place for that to happen. If you want a formal garden setting you will have to pay the double amount and tour the Allerton garden. McBryde was pleasant, but really about conversation and preserving species and not about a visual garden experience. The self guided tour is a... More

This was a pleasant 1-2 hour walk through gardens of different varieties. Many trees & plants were tagged with the botanical & other names (but some were not .) That lack of information was the difference between this and the( guided ) Allerton Gardens tour . I enjoyed my visit , it was worth $20, and the whole NTBG project... More

A self-guided alternative to Allerton Gardens, this more relaxing botanical experience is better suited to those who wish to meander at their own speed through the lush tropical exhibits of Hawaiian flora. Its 252 acres, holding the largest collection of native Hawaiian plants, are organized into various trails one can follow at one's whim. The 'winter' months are not the... More

Touring gardens is not my favorite thing to do . . . . . . but wow what a place ! Bob our guide was worked at the gardens for years and years, and was super. Wear good walking shoes as the tour takes a couple of hours to do. Lots of flowers, plants, trees, fountains, water features, etc to... More

We debated over visiting the McBryde Botanical Gardens or Allerton and, ultimately, the "self-guided" option and lower price won us over to visit McBryde. It was a great way to spend a quiet afternoon after a week of adventure and a morning snorkel tour. The gardens are comprised of all the native plant-life delivered by both natural and human means.... More
