NTBG’s Allerton Garden Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

We took the sunset tour of the Allerton Garden along with 5 other couples. Our guide drove us down to the beach area, where we took about an hour's walk to the estate grounds. The distance is not that great, it's just that we stopped in many locations so that background information could be provided on what we were seeing... More

Our tour of Allerton Garden started off with a short tour-bus ride on a private road from the visitors center to the garden. Beautiful views of the coastline. The garden tour was led by our guide, Kevin, who was fun and knowledgeable. The garden itself is beautiful. Much of the tour goes through outdoor spaces meant to resemble rooms that... More

Take the guided tour and hope you get Kevin as your guide. He knows his stuff - both botanical and historical - has a great sense of humor, and doesn't sound like he's said the same things every day for 10+ years. (which he probably has.) Don't expect an arboretum. There are some blooming plants, but the gardens are mostly... More

Our guide was named Juan, and he clearly loves this place, life and people. He was knowledgable in horticulture, history, architecture, water Managment & which plants belong to the three phases of plant development on this island. He was unfailingly kind, had a lovely sense of humor and went at a pace that worked for the entire group. He is... More

Our guide was very astute about her subject matter and gave us a great tour. It was interesting to see where some movies had been shot.

The Allerton family made some bucks. And with those bucks they bought a pretty sizable chunk of paradise, and set out to make it paradise-er. Granted the fee is hefty, and it's guide-led only, but the guide was very interesting (apparently a hippie from back in the Day turned eco-advocate and plant guru). You should expect: beautiful plant-pairing, sculpture and... More

My mother and I spent the afternoon on a tour of the gardens. It was a great day and David, our guide, was very friendly and knowledgable - you could tell he loves what he does. This is something my mom wanted to do and I am not very much into gardening, but I really enjoyed it!!! I have not... More

This was amazing. They let you eat certain fruits which were tasty. The gardens were magnificent. You get to see the Jurassic park plants. The tour guides were amazing, funny, and smart. I would highly recommend going to this place with your family, friends,or with your partner. It lasts for 3 hours.

Coming from the upper Midwest to experience all of this tropical beauty on a guided tour was really fantastic. Bob was our guide, and his knowledge of the entire garden was very thorough. Highly recommend taking it.
