NTBG’s Allerton Garden Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

We thought this seemed a bit pricey, but went for the Sunset Tour and were glad we did! Our guide, David Flowers, was truly expert and a real pro. He brought history to life, and also deepened our appreciation for the National Tropical Gardens mission. If all of the guides are as good as he is - don't hesitate to... More

Our tour guide spent the entire time regaling a captive audience with his views on politics, religion, local gossip, and his not terribly flattering opinion of his employers. I signed up to look at flowers, not for a lecture politics.

We hadn't planned to go to Allertons but at the end of our stay we decided to go. It was one of my favorite things we did. It was amazing and sooo beautiful. The history was interesting and we felt well informed. Loved the fruit also that we could try. I would love to go back and also do the... More

The history of this 80-acre National Tropical Botanical Garden Gem is fascinating; however I will keep this review focused on what you will see: a stunning and quite varied topography; from rugged cliffs, open meadows, picturesque Lawa’i Stream and a victory garden to meticulously landscaped garden rooms with eye catching architectural features and distinct plant collections. Who could forget the... More

Great gardens, the tour guides are very knowledgeable and enjoyable to listen to. Very peaceful walking around the gardens. The tour is about 2 hours and you have to walk a bit but nothing too strenuous (my 4yr and 2yr olds did it easy).

Nice guides, magical place. Expensive ($40) but worth it. includes Mcbryde. Don't miss if you're in the area but call ahead for tickets.

This is our 3rd tour at Allerton Gardens. We've been on the Allerton Garden tour, the Sunset tour and yesterday did the Discovery tour. To read a full review, please visit http://www.fodors.com/community/united-states/kauai-garden-tours.cfm. To sum up, the Discovery tour is a "behind the scenes tour" for those very interested in the rescue and propagation of endangered endemic plants, and gives you... More

The Allerton Gardens are beautiful lush gardens near Poipu and across from the Spouting Horn. They have nice tours with knowledgeable guides. There are many beautiful flowers and trees including the "Jurassic Park" trees where the eggs were discovered in the first movie. They were magnificent. We've been on the tour 3 times and enjoyed it each time. The most... More

Great! Kauai is a rainforest, and you should go and see these gardens. Beautiful designs that you dont see in many locations anymore, giving inspiration to your own landscape. Photographers dream especially after a rain. You can ask for a guide or not. There are various types of tours so call ahead and ask what is available. Walking shoes a... More

We went on the tour of Allerton Gardens during our recent trip to Kauai. We were blown away by the beauty!! David was our tour guide and he was completely knowledgeable about all the foliage and the history of the Allerton Estate. They take you in a bus up to where the tour begins. The ride up is also interesting... More
