Owner description: NTBG’s Allerton Garden Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

we went with the first morning tour and it was enjoyable. Our guide was Ryan and he was excellent. I did not know what to expect but this turned it to be a relaxing and interesting tour. Ryan was very knowledgable and easy going. The weather was perfect and we stayed cool under the canopy of trees. Interesting history of... More

This is a must see stop even if you don't like gardens. The variety and the guides make this a stop to make. It may seem pricey until you see all the extra views and information you obtain by "going behind the gate". It's a great time!!!

Have gone twice for the morning and the sunset tour. Morning light in the gardens is a wonderful opportunity for great photos. The guides share those special little details about the garden and old Kauai that gardeners and history buffs will really enjoy.

Don't expect to see a lot of flowers here. It is not that kind of garden. It does have lots of trees, beautiful vistas, streams, and theme (formal garden) areas. This was once a sugar plantation and was converted to this beautiful garden. Various movies have been filmed here, including Jurassic Park. One catches a bus for the ride to... More

The gardens were gorgeous. Great views! Our guide was knowledgeable and was able to answer all questions and give us lots of information about the plants and the area in general.

Once a sugar plantation now a beautiful garden paradise. Jurassic Park and other movies were filmed on this location. I recommend you take the guided tour, all proceeds go the preservation of this amazing garden.

Take all the garden tours you can on your visits to the Poipu area National Botanical Garden. Allerton and McBride are inside this national garden and worth exploring, even for non-gardeners. It is a great way to experience paradise.

I was not keen to go, as I am not that found of garden tours. However my partner talked me into going and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. The tour guide was excellent as well as a great story teller. We saw an amazingly designed garden, art and waterworks as put together by John Allerton in the earlier part of... More

I'm not a botanical gardens kind of guy but found this place to be spectacular, with plenty of local flora and incredible views and a great story about Allerton family

Our tour guide, Dave, infused his love and knowledge of Kauai and plants in a unique, wonderfully quirky, and effective way. You have to experience it! Just go.
