NTBG’s Allerton Garden Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

Very informative and nice views. It was more information than we had thought which was both good and bad. Sometimes (especially in the "rooms") the storytelling got a bit long and since we went on a day without any breeze it became very hot. The gardens are just beautiful and very well kept, well worth a visit! Remember bug-repellent and... More

I have stopped doing reviews on Trip Advisor because people rarely acknowledge whether they are helpful or not which is annoying given the effort to write them. However, I will take the time for an exceptional experience like Allerton Garden. I am not into gardens but this is one of the most beautiful and serene places on earth. We do... More

A nonprofit organization, the congressionally chartered National Tropical Botanical Gardens, oversees this beautiful land trust near the south shore's spouting horn attraction. My parents suggested my wife and I visit. We opted for the dinner sunset tour. Our guide Dennis did an exceptional job guiding us through the various outdoor rooms, a combination of sculpture and fauna, before we had... More

Beautiful tour. Ask for the older gentleman who was originally from Spokane to guide your tour. He is fabulous with a ton of local knowledge and history. He knew his plants - I loved his conservation-minded presentation and his dry sense of humor. It was one of the high points of my Kauai trip. He showed where various movies/TV shows... More

Allerton Garden was a bit pricey, but my impression is that they are an independent nonprofit and that all the money they make goes into the maintenance of their vast and beautiful gardens. It was a little hard to distinguish and decide between the McBryde and the Allerton Gardens, but I think our group made the right choice in opting... More

We went on this guided botanical garden tour and were so impressed by the grounds, but also by the good natured tour guide (Dennis) and fun vibe of the tour. It was entertaining with a nice dinner and terrific view on the sunset. We loved seeing the trees from Jurassic Park and hearing about movies filmed there.

We chose to tour allerton gardens because my husband and I love tropical fruit trees. In fact, my husband owns about ten acres of tropical fruit trees and citrus in florida. We were really looking forward to the tour but when we did our one o'clock tour on July 21st , 2015 we were treated to the worst tour guide... More

Costs $45 per person to enter the gardens. This is a lot if you are not traveling alone. $90 for a couple to walk around a garden is too much money, and if you have kids that price just escalates. We were not prepared for the cost prior to arriving.

We were surprised a bus now takes you to the estate on a paved road. In 2007 we were on a “Disney” like tram on a dirt road. We also remember the tour cost $30 dollars in 2007, now the price is $40. We were able to lower that expense by having a coupon we found in a magazine that... More
