Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants. « less

This was the first of the National Botannical Tropical Gardens that we toured. I absolutely loved hearing the history behind the formation of the gardens. The tour guide was so informative, not just about the plants, although he knew them well, but also about the land. As master gardener, I enjoyed every moment of this tour. It was warm, but... More

I was expecting more from my visit, after having read the positive reviews. Interesting tour, many trees and plants, however not many flowers. I visited the Na Aina Kai botanical Gardens the next day and much preferred that tour. In addition to trees, plants the Na Aina Kai gardens had many flowers, loads of sculptures and was much more interesting.

Had an amazing guide that could name off almost every single plant, tell the history of the plant and how it was used, and also could tell us where we could find it today.

We decided that the sunset tour would be a nice way to see the gardens, with a smaller tour group. This turned out to be a great choice, as our tour group ended with about 12 people, plus the driver and the tour guide. Our guide, Dave, found the perfect balance in keeping all of the age groups on the... More

The grounds were lovely. Loved the history and learning about the various plants. Could not believe the variety of flowers in bloom. We were there for the 9am tour, so the heat was not too bad. If sunny, be sure to take the umbrella offered by the guide as it does get quite warm during the walk. Some slopes and... More

See where parts of Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Caribbean were shot--in addition to hundreds of native and "canoe" plants. Bob was a knowledgeable tour guide, and getting to touch and eat various fruits and flowers was fun. We used bug spray and didn't have any bites. This is a nice break from beaches and hiking that provides some... More

This was our third visit, but the first in summer. The grounds are just gorgeous, absolutely worth a visit. Even our 17-year old son was happy to go back. But, this time we got eaten alive by the mosquitos. We purchased the organic mosquito repellant from the gift store. It worked OK for two of us, but not at all... More

While on Kauai, map out some time to take a tour of the Allerton Gardens and to learn more about Sam, Robert and John Allerton and the measures they gone to to protect this beautiful piece of land. You need to sign up for a tour, we were lucky to have only 5 people on our tour and Dave as... More

If you have the time, you don't need a whole day to visit the gardens. So many beautiful fountains and flowers, our guide even let us taste Jabong, Chinese grapefruit that was growing in the gardens. You can check out the tree used in Jurassic park or where pirates of the Caribbean was filmed, all in these beautiful gardens. Plants... More
