Description: Doug and Sandy have been giving authentic Hawaiian slack key guitar and...
Doug and Sandy have been giving authentic Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukelele concerts twice a week at Hanalei Community Center since 1999. They're a standard attraction and an excellent way for visitors to learn about the history of Hawaii's slack key music as well as old stories that inspired the music - Sandy also relates some of the cultural connections of the survival of this native Hawaiian music. Their primary purpose is to make people aware of the history and cultural importance of this type of music. Concerts are one of the most affordable things to do on Kauai and appeal to both the individual visitor as well as to groups or families.

When I first suggested attending this to other family members, they thought I'd lost my mind. However, I had read several reviews that caused me to persist. So glad I did ...and much to their surprise, the rest of my family enjoyed it also. Slack key is apparently extremely difficult to learn and is part of the Hawaiian culture that... More

Doug is a wonderful slack key guitarist! Sandy tells the history of songs and Hawaiian traditions and plays along with Doug. It is a very relaxing, enjoyable concert experience. I highly recommend that you attend one of their concerts when you are staying in Princeville or near Hanalei! It's an experience you won't forget!

Bring your pain and sorrows to Doug and Sandy McMasters for soothing at the Hanalei Community Center in Kauai! The two concerts I attended were highpoints in my six decades as a musician and music critic. They also had a remarkable effect on my back pain, which has lasted through the CDs I purchased (and won) there. Attend, to be... More

Kauai should equal relaxation and the McMaster Slack Key concerts ooze relaxation. Doug has the perfect last name as he is a master of the slack key. Sandy provides a lesson of the slack key and quaint, island stories. The music is so beautiful and the McMasters are kind enough to talk with you between sets. If you have a... More

Great stories and even better music from Doug, I would suggest if your in Hanalei that you take the opportunity. It is very laid back , very island style so if your expecting a fast paced dynamic concert then this is not for you. Sandy's stories are very informative whilst Doug's are very amusing. Sit back and let the light... More

Doug and Sandy are all Kauai. Their music is indigenous to Hanalei, and magical in its serenity. I highly recommend attending one of their "concerts" (more like having them in your home) or if you can't make it to Hanalei, buy their CD's. The best way you can spend your musical funds. Can't wait for the next visit to our... More

We've attended probably 7 or 8 "concerts" over a 5 year period. As some reviewers have noted, these are not "concerts" in the traditional sense of heart-pumping non-stop music. Instead, the vibe is mellow, intimate, slow-down-and-learn some things about old traditional slack key and the culture it comes from. If that vibe isn't what you are open to then probably... More

Wonderful music and very laid back. Concert lasted longer than we thought it would be. Doug and Sandy have a playful relationship which adds to the concert. Since we had jet lag, it was easy to doze off to the soothing music. Intermission was Oreo cookies, Hersey's nuggets and water. We hadn't expected anything, so that was a surprise! Their... More

Absolutely superb, enchanting, beautiful. We happened upon this while visiting Hanalei and were mostly spellbound by the music, stories, laughter, skill and compassion presented by Doug and Sandy. Slack Key Guitar and ukulele at its best!

It’s not just an amazing concert but also once in a lifetime therapy experience. The heartfelt music of Doug and Sandy healed from my past regrets. I also recommend to walk behind the building after the concert, the unbelievably stunning panoramic Hawaiian nature landscape will take your breath away.
