Doug and Sandy have been giving authentic Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukelele concerts twice a week at Hanalei Community Center since 1999. They're a standard attraction and an excellent way for visitors to learn about the history of Hawaii's slack key music as well as old stories that inspired the music - Sandy also relates some of the cultural connections of the survival of this native Hawaiian music. Their primary purpose is to make people aware of the history and cultural importance of this type of music. Concerts are one of the most affordable things to do on Kauai and appeal to both the individual visitor as well as to groups or families.

Wanting to have a true Hawaiian Hanalei grassroots experience? After this musical performance you will feel like you belong in Hanalei. The McMasters present traditional slack key guitar and ukulele entertainment. Doug is committed to playing only traditional style slack key guitar and Sandy backs up on ukulele. They both intersperse witty and informative stories and perspectives of Hawaiian life,... More

If you want a feast for your ears of some pure Hawaiian music try these concerts. This duo is marvelous. They entertain you with music and stories in a local community center where you can actually interact with the artists. The setting is very nice but select your seat wisely as the the music can be very soothing. Some of... More

Doug is an excellent slack key guitarist and Sandy plays ukulele very well and tells some very interesting stories. This would be a 5 star review if the concert were at least 70% slack key and no more than 30% story telling. Unfortunately it is 60% or more Sandy talking stories. She is a very good story teller but she... More

My wife and I recently attended the McMaster Slack Key concert at the Hanalei community center. It was a lovely experience--one of the best possible in Hawaii--not to be missed. We were so impressed that we bought their complete collection of cd's. The concert consisted of great music and interesting history interwoven. We will return anytime we are in Kauai.

We really enjoyed the Mc Master Slack Key concert - it was a wonderful way to get a sense of old Hawaii music. I liked the stories and background that Sandy provided as well. I hope this tradition lives on for a long time!

My wife, daughter and I attended the McMaster's concert, never having developed a taste for slack key guitar, and totally enjoyed ourselves so much we purchases a couple CDs! Doug is indeed a virtuoso guitar player as well as a great entertainer with a very enjoyable sense of humor. Sandy is a super hostess, very good ukulele player, and had... More

He's amazing guitarist, and the two of them (Sandy ukulele and Doug on guitar) have an entertaining and educational banter to add to the experience. Have a much greater appreciation of the art now. Definitely on my 'to do' list!

This is really a must do for anyone interested in Hawaiian music and tradition. Doug is an amazing musician and Sandy tells wonderful stories of the music and the mystique of the islands. For an amazingly low price you get two hours of beautiful music and some insight into its history. We go every time we come to Kauai and... More

Music to float away on ... both are talented musicians. Concert was about 2 hours well worth the time and the $20. Sandy gave background stories of the songs which made listening even better, and speaks the hawaiian words quite well. Both she & Doug have a delightful sense of humor. The CDs are available right there so you can... More

Sitting in a little community hall, listening to Sandy pass history and local knowledge down to the audience, Doug playing the most beautiful serene music, and so we spent the afternoon, enthralled and taken away to a very beautiful place. It doesn't get any better than this.
