They're a standard attraction and an excellent way for visitors to learn about the history of Hawaii's slack key music as well as old stories that inspired the music - Sandy also relates some of the cultural connections of the survival of this native Hawaiian music. Their primary purpose is to make people aware of the history and cultural importance of this type of music. Concerts are one of the most affordable things to do on Kauai and appeal to both the individual visitor as well as to groups or families. « less

Doug is a "really good" guitar player, unfortunately his wife who is a very nice lady and good ukulele player talks to much about Hawaiian slack key history etc. I've been playing guitar for 40 years and was hoping for more guitar. I think they played maybe 6-8 tunes total. the location was beautiful in a valley with big green... More

The Slack Key Concert tuned out to be everything that we were hoping for. The concert is not too short or too long, it was just right. Mr. & Mrs. McMaster are both such very kind people. Together they put on a very good concert, it was well worth it. I recommend anyone visiting Kauai, to attend the concert, you... More

I was a little hesitant to go, even though I play fingerstyle guitar myself in a different genre. Once there I was hooked by Doug's playing. If you are thinking Hawaiian steel guitar this is something altogether different. Doug is an accomplished guitarist and composed or arranged many of the songs they do in various open tunings. Sandy's ukelele is... More

We have been to several McMaster concerts through the years and always enjoy it. I love the laid back feeling, the ties to the land and stories of the people....and what can I say...one of the great slack key players. Doug has been playing since he was 6 yrs old and has learned from the old masters of the islands.... More

It's been a some time since I heard the McMasters in Hanalei.. and it is definitely on my TO DO list when we return to Hawaii.. I sat in that average community centre.. with perhaps about 50 people in the audience, and the music that came from the slack key guitar touched me deeply.. and I felt an immediate sense... More

If you coming to Hawaii, learn the traditions of where and how the beautiful music of slack key came about. A little story telling for each song, but the music is amazing. Wish they did less story telling and more music. But thank you for the amazing art you are keeping alive.

Doug and Sandy performed in a relaxed environment to a small but enthusiastic audience at the Community centre in Hanalei, in the north of Kauai Island. The setting, atmosphere and music blended beautifully, and we were entertained in an intimate invironment to a master Slack Key player, Doug, who played tunes that were relative to the stories that Sandy narrated.... I do not usually write reviews and especially do not like speaking negatively about good people, but I disagree with 99% of the reviewers. As I read the other reviews, I wonder if we saw a different show? We were anticipating a moving, soul-stirring experience, but that is a far cry from what we received. I hope this feedback will... So the weather is a bit unusually unpleasant for 'paradise'---grey, windy, scattered showers---so we to spend a Sunday afternoon going to a "Hawaiian Slack Key Concert". Could not figured out what that was but, hey, I think admission was $10 (by far the cheapest thing to do in Hawaii) so we went. How nice it was! Intimate setting, small group.... More
