They're a standard attraction and an excellent way for visitors to learn about the history of Hawaii's slack key music as well as old stories that inspired the music - Sandy also relates some of the cultural connections of the survival of this native Hawaiian music. Their primary purpose is to make people aware of the history and cultural importance of this type of music. Concerts are one of the most affordable things to do on Kauai and appeal to both the individual visitor as well as to groups or families. « less

Doug and Sandy performed in a relaxed environment to a small but enthusiastic audience at the Community centre in Hanalei, in the north of Kauai Island. The setting, atmosphere and music blended beautifully, and we were entertained in an intimate invironment to a master Slack Key player, Doug, who played tunes that were relative to the stories that Sandy narrated.... I do not usually write reviews and especially do not like speaking negatively about good people, but I disagree with 99% of the reviewers. As I read the other reviews, I wonder if we saw a different show? We were anticipating a moving, soul-stirring experience, but that is a far cry from what we received. I hope this feedback will... So the weather is a bit unusually unpleasant for 'paradise'---grey, windy, scattered showers---so we to spend a Sunday afternoon going to a "Hawaiian Slack Key Concert". Could not figured out what that was but, hey, I think admission was $10 (by far the cheapest thing to do in Hawaii) so we went. How nice it was! Intimate setting, small group.... More

Hearing Doug and Sandy McMaster welcome us and the ancestors to the Community Centre is one of our must-dos whenever we visit Kauai. The stories change, but the message through words and playing is the same about the legacy of slack key guitar, the spirit of the Hawaiian people and their music, and the goodness of sitting quietly to listen... We wandered into this show on a rainy Sunday afternoon a few years back and fell in love with Doug and Sandy. If you are looking for an over produced hotel Luau, this isn't the show for you. It's two great musicians and storytellers making musical magic in one of the most tranquil settings you can imagine. A bargain for... More

This is more "talk story" than the concert as it is called. Out of a 30 minute period there was only 6 minutes of actual music. That being said this gathering is quaint, informative and of great local color. Setting your expectations will improve your satisfaction with the experience.

We visit Kauai every year and make it a Sure Thing on our "to do list" to go to the community center and listen to the McMasters music. Every year we hear new music, new stories and meet new people from around the world. It is a restful place and the tunes that dance from their musical instruments are beyond... More

Everyone who visits Hawaii needs to experience this traditional Hawaiian music. It is mesmerizing, lovely, and total relaxation for your vacation in this beautiful place. Doug and Sandy McMasters do a great job of explaining the music's history and why it is important to the Hawaiian culture, and they are very good and very entertaining. We enjoyed the concert immensely!

It's not hard to keep busy on a Kauai vacation. Set aside a couple hours to relax to the mesmerizing music of the McMasters. We drove up from Kapa'a especially for this concert, and I'm glad we did. This couple is Kauai set to music, you'll never hear anything quite like it anywhere else in the world. And they throw... More
