Type: Concerts, Performances
Owner description: Doug and Sandy have been giving authentic Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukelele concerts twice a week at Hanalei Community Center since 1999. They're a standard attraction and an excellent way for visitors to learn about the history of Hawaii's slack key music as well as old stories that inspired the music - Sandy also relates some of the cultural connections of the survival of this native Hawaiian music. Their primary purpose is to make people aware of the history and cultural importance of this type of music. Concerts are one of the most affordable things to do on Kauai and appeal to both the individual visitor as well as to groups or families.

This is really a must do for anyone interested in Hawaiian music and tradition. Doug is an amazing musician and Sandy tells wonderful stories of the music and the mystique of the islands. For an amazingly low price you get two hours of beautiful music and some insight into its history. We go every time we come to Kauai and... More

Music to float away on ... both are talented musicians. Concert was about 2 hours well worth the time and the $20. Sandy gave background stories of the songs which made listening even better, and speaks the hawaiian words quite well. Both she & Doug have a delightful sense of humor. The CDs are available right there so you can... More

Sitting in a little community hall, listening to Sandy pass history and local knowledge down to the audience, Doug playing the most beautiful serene music, and so we spent the afternoon, enthralled and taken away to a very beautiful place. It doesn't get any better than this.

We have returned to Mc Master Slack Key Concerts on each of our three visits to Kauai. These concerts are a highlight of our visit. The music is utterly beautiful and relaxing and the narrative provided with the music explains how Slack Key guitar music developed in the Hawaiian Islands. If you visit Kauai, by all means go!

The McMasters are amazingly talented and informative. The venue was ideal and their concert was an excellent way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

There are few musicians who display such love of Hawaiian culture and its beauty than Doug and Sandy. Not only are their concerts rife with glorious music, but when Sandy talks story, it brings the whole audience into the peace, complexity and sheer joy of the magnificent slack key guitar sound. Every concert is different with never fewer than a... More

Even on holiday, one can be reminded there is still another level of calm to be reached. Thanks to Doug and Sandy, we had the ever so small remaining wrinkles in our souls smoothed. An intimate setting, not crowds had us feel we were gifted a personal concert. The CD's went with us and we use them as needed, to... More

Doug is a "really good" guitar player, unfortunately his wife who is a very nice lady and good ukulele player talks to much about Hawaiian slack key history etc. I've been playing guitar for 40 years and was hoping for more guitar. I think they played maybe 6-8 tunes total. the location was beautiful in a valley with big green... More

Aloha! I appreciate that you pointed out that the concert includes stories of the history of traditional Hawaiian slack key music and the songs. This is important to 99% of our audience members. As we get started, I explain the purpose of the concerts, as guided by the last slack key caretaker on Molokai. Our kuleana (responsibility) is to give... More

The Slack Key Concert tuned out to be everything that we were hoping for. The concert is not too short or too long, it was just right. Mr. & Mrs. McMaster are both such very kind people. Together they put on a very good concert, it was well worth it. I recommend anyone visiting Kauai, to attend the concert, you... More

I was a little hesitant to go, even though I play fingerstyle guitar myself in a different genre. Once there I was hooked by Doug's playing. If you are thinking Hawaiian steel guitar this is something altogether different. Doug is an accomplished guitarist and composed or arranged many of the songs they do in various open tunings. Sandy's ukelele is... More
