Doug and Sandy have been giving authentic Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukelele concerts twice a week at Hanalei Community Center since 1999. They're a standard attraction and an excellent way for visitors to learn about the history of Hawaii's slack key music as well as old stories that inspired the music - Sandy also relates some of the cultural connections of the survival of this native Hawaiian music. Their primary purpose is to make people aware of the history and cultural importance of this type of music. Concerts are one of the most affordable things to do on Kauai and appeal to both the individual visitor as well as to groups or families.

We were able to attend 2 concerts and highly recommend. Doug is slack key master and wife accompanies on ukulele and talks story about slack key in islands and experiences. Concert in local community center and small area but adequate. If you want to slow down and try and connect to island and feel it come alive from Hawaiian point... More

First, this is not a concert with multiple slack key artists. It’s just Doug and his wife Sandy in an intimate community center building that seats maybe 30-40. Second, he plays as much of his own compositions as he does of the masters – so it’s really his style that is “traditional” rather than the music. Finally, the show will... More

So we expected to listen to some "Hawaiian Music" while killing time before going out to dinner ... Wrong-o! Friends took us to this concert, held regularly in Hanalei, and they just told us that it was live, small, and "interesting." Doug and Sandy create a very evocative atmosphere of Hawaiian music, but also answer some of the questions that... More

Way too much talking and not enough music. Loved the history of slack key in the first half, but second half was preaching about pantheistic theology. I even had to pay $20.

Doug and Sandy are amazing conduits for true aloha. My husband and I could literally feel the powerful love and passion for sharing their stories through the music. It was so delightful to experience their presence as a couple as well. They laugh, cry and share from their hearts. This was one of the most moving and magical experiences we... More

When you're in Kauai, and especially on the north shore, near Hanalei, there's no lack of ways to spend your time. Be sure to share a couple of hours of time and space with Doug and Sandy McMaster at one of their concerts. You will truly feel the Aloha! And hear some great guitar! They do a great job educating... Our family attended Doug and Sandy's concert at the Hanalei Community Center. It was so lovely. The stories Sandy tells of the songs that are "given" to Doug were wonderful. We will return when we come back to Kauai.

We go to hear Doug play every time we get to Kauai. It's always a different program and we always leave relaxed and refreshed. Sandy is an able partner to Doug's playing. Purchase a couple of their CDs to prolong your pleasure when you have to return to the mainland.

When I first suggested attending this to other family members, they thought I'd lost my mind. However, I had read several reviews that caused me to persist. So glad I did ...and much to their surprise, the rest of my family enjoyed it also. Slack key is apparently extremely difficult to learn and is part of the Hawaiian culture that... More
