Want to wander through a tropical paradise? Some would say that all of Hawaii qualifies as a tropical wonder, but one place specifically designed for the title is the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, located near Hilo. I have visited many different botanical gardens with the family and most all of them have their charms. Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden ranks among... More

This is a must do on the big island! Bring a camera because the photos are endless! Waterfalls, orchids and lush green plants as far as the eye can see! Bring bug spray because I did get a few bits but it was worth it!

My daughter (HI resident) and husband indulged me in visiting this extensive garden. Both were as impressed as I with the variety of plants, especially the orchids. We spent two hours enjoying a peaceful walk, photographing plants and the occasional lizard. The gift shop has starter plants - the gentleman on duty gave my daughter tips on successfully cultivating plumeria... More

The garden was even better than I expected. We were lucky enough to visit on a sunny morning when many of the plants were in bloom. The variety of tropical plants is amazing and if you are a plant lover, or visiting with one, plan to spend a few hours seeing them all. Waterfalls, flowers, the beautiful ocean, birds....it is... We love to visit gardens when we travel, and this one is right up there with some of the best we have seen anywhere. Especially as you wind down towards the ocean and see the views. The monkeypod trees are so majestic. Many interesting species of plants and flower, and trees. It was slightly off the beaten path but once... More

We visited the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden on a rainy day in May 2015. The setting is beautiful and the flowers were gorgeous. Since my wife had had a knee replacement not too long ago we chose the shuttle which took us down into the heart of the gardens. It worked out great. Near the end of our visit there... More

Many guidebooks recommended the gardens so we chose to visit this one over the others in Hilo. Ample parking is available. Nearby are restrooms and the air-conditioned gift shop where the entrance fee is paid. Green umbrellas are situated outside for use if needed. The garden is located across the street from the parking lot. It was very humid that... More

Having seen this attraction 22 years ago and having been impressed then, we decided to return to it on this trip. Since then it has grown manyfold in size and is even more stunning than it was before. The setting of the hundreds of different plants from all over the world is so natural and well integrated into the landscape... More

I love bringing guests from the mainland here -- it is well worth the drive from Kona. Stroll at your own pace, and if you brought a camera or cell phone you will stop constantly to snap photos of the vibrant tropical flowers, the amazingly delicate orchids, the lush ferns . . . even a waterfall. Walk down to the... More

If you are coming to Hilo, by sea or air, I would suggest going here second. First go through the town (as we did) and see the stuff, namely market. Then (in our case through Holland America) go to this place. The trees, the flowers, the roar of the sea, it's just amazing! Bring a good camera with a 30... More
