The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is a 501(c)(3) Scientific and Educational non-profit, whose mission is to serve as a nature preserve and sanctuary, a living seed bank, and a study center for trees and plants of the tropical world. The Garden is dedicated to the collection and display of the world's tropical plants, and to the education of both children and adults about the plight of the world's rainforests. Plan to spend hours here! It is a scrumptious garden tucked in a rainforest valley next to the coast, about 10 miles north of Hilo. Driving on the Scenic Route to the garden, is a trip in itself. The garden is laid out along winding paved paths, with lovely groupings of tropical plants and flowers. Along a creek that tumbles... More

What a splendid experience! Take an unbelievable walk amongst all the plants of a rainforest. Exquisite waterfalls, plants & flowers from all over the world set in a magnificent setting which winds down to the shores of the coast. We thought $15 each was a bit expensive at first but the place is so well maintained and a real eye opener... More

This beautiful little garden ended up being one of the highlights of the trip! It is incredibly beautiful and their orchid garden is something out of a fairytale. They were also really helpful and accommodating with my grandmother who was in a wheel chair. The story from the garden is an amazing one. It used to be a fishing village,... More

We weren't sure if the botanical garden would be worth the money but it exceeded all expectations. My husband took over 100 pictures of plants and flowers. We appreciate the founders of this garden and those who keep it in such beautiful shape. Never have we seen so many rare and beautiful plants and flowers.

We happened upon the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Center while driving north along the coast outside of Hilo. What a great surprise! If you love plants and flowers in their natural environment, this the tour for you. Expect a long walk downhill, so comfortable shoes are a must. We have trouble walking and we managed to walk down the hill just... More

We were driving along the scenic side road and decided to stop and check out the site. A gorgeous place with well maintained trails which are well marked. Beautiful flowers also identified. A large enclosed area with colorful parrots. Beautiful waterfalls and an ocean vista. The history of making this garden is inspiring and such a dedication to one man's... More

We drove our rental car from Kona through Waimea & on down the coast towards Hilo - very scenic, interesting terrain with lots of variety in trees & foliage. There are a couple of gardens on this side, but these looked most interesting. The gardens are located along a scenic coastal drive just north of Hilo. We've found Hawaii sorely... More

The tour begins at the visitor's center, the cost was $15 per adult. Take a few minutes at the center to read up on the history and the artifacts that were found in this area that used to be a sugar cane farm. The Onomea Bay is an amazing view from the gardens but be sure to stop along the... More
