We hiked on 04/26/13 and choose to go with a private tour our guide was awesome and was extremely attentive. We had viewed that Lava 10/09 from a view point which is now gone he showed up where it was and told us when it was covered over which for us made it personal he would walk us over if... More

I highly recommend this lava hike! We hiked to the lava flow on 5/1 and was an amazing experience. The hike out to the lava is a little long, it's a 5mi hike round trip. Maybe about 45 min / 1 hr hiking over lava to get to the flow. But, it's definitely worth it! Once we got to the... More

Before our trip, I was trying to decide between a daytime tour vs. an evening tour (4:30p). Advantage of the evening tour: See the glow of the lava; Walking in is bright and you can see where you are going more easily Advantage of Day tour: Fully bright during hike and you can see your footing the whole time; Less... We hiked to the lava flow with Andrew on April 24th. Unlike most reviewers, we hiked during the day as a personal tour. We were able to take in and appreciate the lava field formations and note the different mineral deposits in the lava. The lava was approaching the ocean and was moving at a good pace! We were able... It is quite the trek across black lava rocks, but the view at the end is well worth it. Watched lava flowing into the ocean and then watched it slowly gooping out of the surface of the earth! A once in a lifetime experience!

Spent from 5:30 to 10 on a hike with Koa, our guide, and ten others. Hiked nearly two hours in daylight. Got to surface flow just as the sun was setting. Really exciting, especially when the lava would break out and flow towards us. Koa said we could get as close as the heat would allow. Got within ten feet... More

This hiking experience was truly once in a lifetime. We hiked across lava that was a few months to years old for about 2 hours, then came to the seaside where we watched from a cliff lava flowing into the ocean. It was completely awe inspiring. After the guide let us spend as much time as we wanted watching the... More

Before visiting The Big Island for a brief (but wonderful) trip in December 2012, we researched the many options to view the volcano/lava: Hawaii Volcanoes NP, helicopter tour, bike tour, boat tour. We decided on the Kalapana Lava Tours, and are so glad we did. We genuinely believe this was the best way to view the lava flow, and provided... More

This has to be the MUST see and MUST do on your Hawaii vacation list. There's no better company to do it with then kalapana cultural tours. The local staff and guides there are very friendly, from checking in to the shuttle ride to the long hike and back to the main office. Our guide was very friendly and knew... More

I went to Kalapana with my family a couple of years ago, and I learned about this hike from a salesperson handing out brochures at the viewpoint. I made it a priority to go on the hike once I returned last month. They offer a kama'aina discount, so if you live in Hawaii, make sure to get your discount! Our... More
