This is one hot tour, literally. This is about a 6 or 7 hour tour/hike. It started off about 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The length depends on where the lava is flowing, it changes from time to time. We started off with a very nice afternoon hike. Your walking on hardened lava the whole time, it's a rough surface,... More

We took this tour January 27th, 2014 - two great young men took us on a boat tour, explaining the history of the area, showing us lots of waterfalls and geological features and then we went whale watching. A humpback calf made a breaching show for 10 minutes at least! We did see a few other whales in the area... More

Recently visited the big Island, Hilo, and the absolute best part of our visit was the whale watching tour with Kalapana cultural tours. The owner, our captain, is a native Hawaiian along with his crew members. This tour was not only wonderful for the whale sightings and the extraordinary effort made to give us the best experience, it was great... More

Charming tour guides willingly shared history, culture and nature knowledge with 4 young seniors. They were attentive and concerned for our comfort which we very much appreciated as we were all wondering if we would have any sea sickness issues. We didn't. The water swells were thrilling, not bumpy. Best of all they found the whales-lots of them. Even though... More

We spent Christmas eve morning with KCT on a tour up the coast north of Hilo. Extremely enjoyable trip. The guides pointed out many interesting sites and we were able to get a view that I had never seen , in my 8 trips to the big island. Safety was always primary in the guides mind as evidenced by the... More

I am happy to hear we provided you totally different sights even though you've been here 8 times! All of our tours visit places that tourists cannot frequent alone. I'm confident that next time you visit we can do the same! Aloha! More

KCT took us on a magical boat tour up the Hamakua Coast. It was like going back in time: seeing waterfalls set deep in the jungled cliff-sides, old sugar cane mills, hearing stories of the history and culture of the coastline, and all the while seeing whales and dolphins playing in the surf. The guides were so competent on the... More

Easy but hot hike over recent lava fields. Guide was great. Got within a few feet of the lava! One of best excursions I've ever done. Seeing lava flow into the ocean was awesome.

Want an experience that only a few can say they've done on their trip to Hawaii? Then do the Kalapana-Cultural Tours Boat Tour. Seriously an experience of a lifetime. You leave Hilo bay and boat into history, culture, and beauty. See old sugar mills, drastic cliff lines, and majestic waterfalls. As soon as we left the bay we saw whales,... More

We chose an aggressive tour because the lava was further out in the field. It was a long and challenging hike but the guides were wonderful and had lots of stories to share on the way out. Check the hike time before you go - also wear the right gear. You can get hurt doing this if you aren't very... More

Mahalo for joining us back in September, Beth! Glad our guide, Andrew, gave you a safe and enlightening experience. The lava has changed our life also, as your guide shared with you on your hike. You are very lucky for joining us when you did actually because the lava has since flown into a zone inaccessible and illegal to hike... More
