Stopped at South Point to take in the view and while there 2 local fellows were jumping into a 40 foot deep hole into the eater below. After landing they would swim out to the sea and come up the steel ladder. From there we headed to the Green Sand Beach. Two ways to get in - walk or 4x4!... More

Officially a highlight of my big Island visit. On our way to Volcano we stopped there and walked to the green sans beach. We walked to get there it took an hour, but it was really nice, your shoes turn into orange shoes because of the sand so be prepare, no flip flops! If you can't walk there's trucks that... More

Do it. Go early (7:30 AM)! Be the first there. Do the hike. It's going to take 1 hour to get there and 1 hour to get back. Off the beaten path and very special.

We had a jeep, so we navigated the path and made it to the Green Sand Beach with no issues. Once there, you have to kind of hike down. There are steps, but still, be very careful. The sand is an olive green color and the waves are rough. There were people diving off the left side of the cliffs.... More

Disclaimer: We didn't make it to the green sand beach. We did, however, spend almost two hours wandering along the rocks and coves around south point. The power of the wind and ocean here is immense. I'm not sure if we were there on a particularly choppy day, but the waves coming in to crash on the shore were 30ft... More

South Point is 12 miles off the main road, but although narrow, it is paved all the way. Kind of neat to be there, although we didn't jump (lousy swimmer!) Worth the drive, thugh

This is a must see. Be sure to take your bathing suit and a few towels. When you get there to park, there really isn't any directions as to where to go. You'll get approached by someone as soon as you pull in, asking if you want to be given a drive to the beach. He wanted $15 from each... More

The southern most point of the United States. There are mooring points where ancient Polynesian sailors landed. The cliffs are eerie. The road is pretty bad. But definately worth the trip. I can't believe fisherman climb down the ladders to the ocean below. Brave souls.

There are two ways to access Papakolea. First is to hire a driver or drive in your own 4x4. The other option is to hike the approximately one hour in too the beach. I would highly recommend the hike in and out. Yes it takes time; yes it's a bit dusty; however to walking too the beach is half the... More
