Description:

Waipio On Horseback offers special guided excursions on horseback in...

Waipio On Horseback offers special guided excursions on horseback in secluded Waipi'o Valley. Our small groups savor the charm of this 2 1/2 hour adventure in old Hawaii.

This trek takes a leisurely pace. Our guides narrate throughout the ride, explaining the history, legends and facts of life in the valley. The path meanders through lush jungle trails along the hillside; through streams and rivers; and on to ancient Hawaiian villages. Riders see dramatic 1,200-foot waterfalls, taro patches, lotus ponds, wild horses, exotic flowers, plants, native trees and birds. See one of Hawaii's oldest forms of farming that produces taro, a Hawaiian staple that helps feed our local community.

We meet at the WOH Barn located 7-1/2 miles toward Waipio from Honokaa. Riders travel via four-wheel drive vehicle into Waipi'o Valley-ancient Hawaii's "Valley of the Kings." We depart from the WOH Barn at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm daily. The trail ride begins on the valley floor. Then a four-wheel drive vehicle takes the riders out of the valley and drops them off back at the WOH Barn.

A minimum of two and a maximum of fourteen riders are allowed on each excursion. Refunds are given on cancellations received in our office 24 hours or more in advance of the reserved ride time.

Because of our remote location, reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance. Weather plays a vital role in this tour's operation and can change rapidly. In case of hard rain or flood conditions, this tour is subject to cancellation. We will give as much advance warning as soon as possible in these situations.

This is a unique and active tour. We recommend guests be agile and in good health. We suggest pants and covered shoes. Children under twelve years of age will be accepted if they are with a responsible adult or are experienced riders.

Waipi'o Valley is just an amazing place. Can't miss for the island. I came to Waipi'o one day on my trip just to hike down to the beach and hang out and met a few locals that day... read more

This was a memorable tour on gentle horses through a part of the valley that many do not otherwise get to see. I truly enjoyed it and got some good photos. I'm giving this three stars due to two things. First, the gentleman who checked us in at the ranch was unwelcoming, grumpy, and critical. I came in wearing my... More

This is what they advertise: "Be amazed by the majestic scenery and beauty of the valley as our sure footed horses take you over lush jungle trails, under flowering canopies and through curving streams. You will be captivated by cascading waterfalls, 3,000 foot sheer cliffs, farmlands, and wild horses. Get an exclusive view of Naʻalapa falls as you tour the... More

You should realize, you never get "near" the falls. You just ride, past them. You ride a van "down" to the bottom, then you get on horses, then you ride back the way you just came. Next you go back to where the horses are kept, then you ride a van back up to,the top. Not exactly what they say... More

A super friendly and knowledgeable group to guide you through this spiritually and historically significant magnificent valley. Laughs from the beginning but extremely knowledgeable about the history and flora and fauna of the valley. A very different experience from any of the highland horseback riding excursions on Hawaii. Horses are gentle and you can be basically hands free to take... More

Owned and run by a Waipi'o local, this ride is horse friendly (no bits), stunningly beautiful, and full of history and information as you wind through streams and under the canopy of the Waipi'o Valley on your ride. Horses are friendly and tranquil. We saw several wild horses, taro fields, and waterfalls. Can't imagine visiting the big island and missing... More

Seeing the valley from the roads on top of the valley doesn't due this valley justice. Limited vehicle access to the valley floor and DEFINITELY need 4-wheel drive. Don't try to walk down because the walk back up it very strenuous. The horse tour reveals a whole new world including folks who have said goodbye to the real world. Vietnam... More

This is an enjoyable experience for all level riders. The scenery is beautiful. You get a different perspective from the Waipi'o valley, looking up the mountain sides, seeing waterfalls as well as lush foliage. Sure footed horses will take you over the trails and through water crossings and before you know it, your ride is over - much too soon!

This was such a joy to do through an area of Hawaii that one would not normally see! We started out at the main location and were then driven down to the horses in a 15 passenger 4-wheel drive van. It was quite the experience getting down a 20% grade one lane road but it was fun and beautiful. Once... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our excursion with Waipi'o on Horseback. From the steep drive down to the valley to the laid-back horseback ride through Hawaiian beauty, we loved every minute of it. Our guides, Sarah & Micah, were both very friendly and helpful. Sarah was sweet to point out flowers, plants, and such along the way and she even recommended a... More
