Type: Horseback Riding Stables, Outdoor Activities
Owner description: Waipio On Horseback offers special guided excursions on horseback in secluded Waipi'o Valley. Our small groups savor the charm of this 2 1/2 hour adventure in old Hawaii. This trek takes a leisurely pace. Our guides narrate throughout the ride, explaining the history, legends and facts of life in the valley. The path meanders through lush jungle trails along the hillside; through streams and rivers; and on to ancient Hawaiian villages. Riders see dramatic 1,200-foot waterfalls, taro patches, lotus ponds, wild horses, exotic flowers, plants, native trees and birds. See one of Hawaii's oldest forms of farming that produces taro, a Hawaiian staple that helps feed our local community. We meet at the WOH Barn located 7-1/2 miles toward Waipio from Honokaa. Riders travel via four-wheel drive vehicle into Waipi'o Valley-ancient Hawaii's "Valley of the Kings." We depart from the WOH Barn at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm daily. The trail ride begins on the valley floor. Then a four-wheel drive vehicle takes the riders out of the valley and drops them off back at the WOH Barn. A minimum of two and a maximum of fourteen riders are allowed on each excursion. Refunds are given on cancellations received in our office 24 hours or more in advance of the reserved ride time. Because of our remote location, reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance. Weather plays a vital role in this tour's operation and can change rapidly. In case of hard rain or flood conditions, this tour is subject to cancellation. We will give as much advance warning as soon as possible in these situations. This is a unique and active tour. We recommend guests be agile and in good health. We suggest pants and covered shoes. Children under twelve years of age will be accepted if they are with a responsible adult or are experienced riders.

We took a morning ride and enjoyed every moment. Fun to ride up and down the steep road, and the views of the valley are amazing. The horses are gentle and well trained. Guides experienced and informative. I give them extra points for providing riding hats. Don't forget to tip your guide!

We booked a ride for New Year's Day, and my credit card was charged. We also received a confirmation e-mail. I got an e-mail from a representative of Hawaii Online saying that there was an e-mail mix-up, so our reservation was lost. Now everything is booked up. I cancelled a reservation because I got a reservation here. I guess now... More

This valley is jaw dropping gorgeous! My 4x4 tour guide made me laugh all the way especially when he said the faster route to come down is by zip line - and pointed to a telephone wire. There were a few cars that drove to the ranch. This ranch is beautiful. There is such history in those wood beams. I... More

My wife and I were on our honeymoon. We got really lucky that day since we were the only ones who showed up on the tour, so we had it all to our selves. Earlier in the morning, we did the quad bike tour (Ride the rim) and touring the upper hills and we were wishing to get the chance... More

You definitely will NOT want to miss out on this tour in literally one of the most beautiful places on earth! I did the waipio on horseback adventure ride in October 2014 with my husband and two kids. It was all of our favorite thing we did on the big island. Two guides take you down the steepest paved rode... More

We did the Waipio Valley Horseback Adventure ride in August of 2014. It was a beautiful ride through an incredibly scenic valley. The guides were very experienced and helpful, and the horses were well behaved and very surefooted, even on riverbeds made up of round river-rock. Everyone had a wonderful time and saw some awesome sights. We also learned about... More

The valley is literally gorgeous, you can't believe how much. And the guides are super friendly and knowledgable. Most important, they live in the valley themselves, off the grid, and are just fascinating to get to know and hear from as they share what life is like in the valley - so different from our east coast life! The horses... More

What a stunning way to see the Waipi'o valley!! It is a gorgeous slice of heaven. The waterfalls are a spectacular sight. The owners, wranglers were friendly, helpful and very informative. You see vegetation in this valley that you can't see anywhere else. I would recommend this out-of-the-way adventure on your Big Island. I also recommend stopping at Grandma's in... More

This is a beautiful ride in the Waipio Valley - an excellent way to see a part of the island that would be very hard to experience otherwise. The staff is very friendly and the horses are gentle and easy. I would caution that they didn't have helmets, not even for children. I think that's a major oversight. Also, I... More

We went with family, adult and teenage children. The check in gate was a little hard to find off the main highway but we got on the second time by. Easy check in procedure. You take a van from this area to the Waipi'o valley via a very steep road. Go to the Lookout before or after your ride for... More
