Description: Waipio On Horseback offers special guided excursions on horseback in...
Waipio On Horseback offers special guided excursions on horseback in secluded Waipi'o Valley. Our small groups savor the charm of this 2 1/2 hour adventure in old Hawaii. This trek takes a leisurely pace. Our guides narrate throughout the ride, explaining the history, legends and facts of life in the valley. The path meanders through lush jungle trails along the hillside; through streams and rivers; and on to ancient Hawaiian villages. Riders see dramatic 1,200-foot waterfalls, taro patches, lotus ponds, wild horses, exotic flowers, plants, native trees and birds. See one of Hawaii's oldest forms of farming that produces taro, a Hawaiian staple that helps feed our local community. We meet at the WOH Barn located 7-1/2 miles toward Waipio from Honokaa. Riders travel via four-wheel drive vehicle into Waipi'o Valley-ancient Hawaii's "Valley of the Kings." We depart from the WOH Barn at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm daily. The trail ride begins on the valley floor. Then a four-wheel drive vehicle takes the riders out of the valley and drops them off back at the WOH Barn. A minimum of two and a maximum of fourteen riders are allowed on each excursion. Refunds are given on cancellations received in our office 24 hours or more in advance of the reserved ride time. Because of our remote location, reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance. Weather plays a vital role in this tour's operation and can change rapidly. In case of hard rain or flood conditions, this tour is subject to cancellation. We will give as much advance warning as soon as possible in these situations. This is a unique and active tour. We recommend guests be agile and in good health. We suggest pants and covered shoes. Children under twelve years of age will be accepted if they are with a responsible adult or are experienced riders.

Friendly folks, healthy horses, stunning scenery. Well worth it for the experience.

Friendly folks, healthy horses, stunning scenery. A little more off-established-trail riding would push this to the 5-star level. Well worth it for the experience.

My wife and I received little training on the horses prior to heading out on the ride (January of 2013). Unfortunately, my wife's horse suddenly took off to chase after another horse and she was thrown to the ground, resulting in a broken collarbone and punctured lung. The staff was far away when they should've been close by to stop... More

We are always excited to try horseback riding on our trips but are very aware of the variable quality one might encounter. Waipi'o on Horseback is a true quality operation. Thoughtful about safety, quality of the experience for the group, and surprisingly, a superb interpretive presentation of the history of the valley and insight to the agriculture and culture. The... I'll start out by saying I would definitely recommend doing the ride in the valley. It was absolutely beautiful. But I wasn't impressed with Waipio on Horseback. First, upon checking in, we were 'greeted' by a not so friendly guy that expressed his irritation with us for coming early (we were 15mins early). Wow, really? Would you rather us be... More

The van ride down the steep slope into the valley is almost enough. But then you get on a horse and ride through this valley, complete with waterfall, farms, and truly Breathtaking views. The guides are helpful and very nice Thanks again Dava. They accommodate those of us who are not "horse people". This was my second horseback ride. The... More

This was one of our favorite parts of our whole vacation. The valley is so incredibly beautiful to see, but to see it on horseback was heavenly. Our guides, Dava and Ronald, were so knowledgeable about the history of the valley, and the flora and fauna and people that called it their home. They were nice, funny, and helpful. It... More

I wish to express my sincere appreciation to Sarah Rebello and Ronald Bannister for making our "Waipi'o on Horseback" trip an outstanding adventure. On your brochure it says "For An Adventure Not Easily Forgotten" may I clearly state "NO TRUER words were ever spoken" The Waipi'o Valley itself was magical beyond belief but the added surprises provided by Ronald &... My bf booked this tour for us a month before we visited the big island. The lady said she had us in the books and just to call the day before in case there were any changes on timing of the tour, etc. We called the day before and she asked us to call another number, which he did and... More

My sister recalled a horrifying experience where wild horses spooked her horse here. Unsolicited, the neighbor at Orchid Isle Fiber arts at Kukuihaele particularly mentioned Well-Behaved Horses! Thelma, who took our reservation, is a really nice local person with great info and recommendations about things to do.
