Visitor center I guess is about 1.5km above sea level, and a must have stop before heading up, as advised by experts. It is great place for souveniers as well :) there is good quality toilets, picknick table, some short trails to get used to air. People working there are great story tellers as well. We spent there 1/2h hour,... More

If you are in a group(4 to 5 people),fit and confident of driving you are all good to go on your own.I would recommend drive only in the day time and you should be aware that you will have to drive on saddle road for about 5miles. As an Adventure trip you can go on your own but if you... More

The visitor center was closed during our visit apparently because a group of 'protesters' who don't like telescopes were abusing the restrooms here. Hopefully, they'll get the visitor center open again very soon.

First thing first, have a good jeep or vehicle able to drive on low gear. This place is very high and sometimes we ignore the fact considering we imagine Hawai to be beach based location. Carry sufficient cold clothes and make sure you reach there atleast one hour before sunset. This location needs time to reach and once you are... More

We purposely rented a 4x4 to make sure we get a chance to climb up Mauna Kea! It was worth It! My wife and I had a difficult time with the 40% less oxygen in the summit but we did alright. We should have spent more time resting and getting acclimated. Sunset was wonderful. Seeing al the stars were amazing.... More

Informative and educational. Mauna Kea is a must for people who love beauty, nature and history. Nice hiking area and a great place to spend an hour or two.

This is a place that offers a window to the universe. We frequent this opportunity. There are a few activities to part take in along the journey. I am prayerful that the natives understand that their ancestors may have wanted to share this window to universe for better understanding of the universe. Currently this site is blocked in opposition. Check... More

Plan to spend a bit of time to properly discover this observatory. To make the experience even better join up with a tour group and proceed all the way up to the top of the mountain, where you will find thin air, be above the clouds, and see forever. Don't be surprised the lights are so dim and it's hard... More

This place is really cool. We were body surfing in the morning and hiking in the snow that evening. We were lucky and got some tours of telescopes, but my head started banging from the elevation, over 14,000 ft. Have warm clothes.

Unbelievable sunset amidst the numerous telescopes. Freezing cold but feeling on top of the world on the top of world's tallest mountain.
