This was one place that I was wanting see before arriving to the Big Island. We rented a Jeep Wrangler for our stay on the island so we were prepared for the drive up the mountain to the observatory. When we arrived on top I couldn't believe the view, it was beautiful plus there was plenty of snow! This experience... More

Traveled up the Mtn. have never been exposed to anything like this- to look around at 360 view- chilly so wear a jacket. Make sure you go to the night viewing check for dates and times

So awesome to be up so high with an incredible view! I recommend renting a 4WD vehicle, otherwise you can't keep going up the road past the visitor center because it gets too steep. About 20 degrees lower than the temp at the bottom of the volcano so DRESS WARM!

Good information centre, great volunteers and good star gazing. Overall its a great free experience. I would recommend for those interested in star gazing, other than that there is not a whole lot to do up there. It's very cold (almost zero when we were there and some people were still in shorts from the beach). Bring food and a... More

Loved coming here and seeing the stars from up here. The staff is amazing and the drive is fun, the end fo the road towards the top can be a struggle for 2 WD cars. Definitely check out the star gazing!

Well worth the ride. Remember to bring a jacket and plan to stargaze after watching the sunset. The telescopes are like something you have never seen before!

The people running the Visitor Station are very nice and friendly. They are very helpful and go out of their way to answer questions about Mauna Kea. There are many telescopes set up so if you are willing to travel at night then this is the place to be to view the stars. There are an assortment of gifts to... More

We went to watch the sunrise, very early, very cold, very windy, even if we planned to dress properly: long pants, heavy jacket, gloves, hat. But this was so worthy. The night was beautiful with amazing view of the stars, and the sunrise was just a pure happiness. We were lucky to have all the clouds down the mountain and... More

You HAVE to go here on a trip to the Big Island. We went right before sunset and hiked to watch it. It was beautiful and so crazy to be above the clouds. After the sun sets, you can see for yourself why this is one of the best places on earth to star gaze. The visitor center has telescopes... More

Last summer my family went to Great Basin National Park which is supposed to have some of the best stargazing in the U.S. It has nothing compared with this. We missed a lot of the star talk but the telescopes were set up and the people running the telescopes were helpful. The sky was unbelievably full of stars. Make sure... More
