We stopped here to visit the after taking the scenic drive down from the Northeast island. We saw mongoose running around the park and lots of locals fishing and swimming. There is a diving rock that the kids were having fun jumping off and lots of families enjoying the shady areas.

The photographs of locals and their personal stories make the museum experience. Photos of Old Hawaii, Hilo residents dealing with the natural disaster and quite a bit of information about Tsunami's and disaster preparation.

It's a nice spot to have lunch, and you can see Mauna Kea behind Hilo, but if you miss this you haven't missed anything special.

Right in Hilo Bay, this spot gives a great view of downtown Hilo from the harbor. It's free to enter, really just a park. We didn't stay here long, but enjoyed the scenery of downtown Hilo across the water. Right next to the Japanese gardens, which are also worth a quick visit.

This is THE place to watch the sunrise. There's a small area to swim in a protected cove-great for little kids. There's also a large, high structure with stairs where some adventurous types were jumping off into the water. There's a large grassy area, picnic tables and bathrooms with an outside shower. At the far north end, it's all lava... More

My husband and I bought fish at a near-by fish market and took everything to Coconut Island. What a wonderful surprise-- it was a real island. We walked across a long bridge and found a picnic table and set up our portable grill to cook the fish. We watch people swimming in the water and saw a family paddle boarding.... More

I came to the Big Island looking to purchase real estate and was very disappointed by the lack of any beach around this island. The shoreline is basically lava rock. This is as good as you get here. My daughter saw some boys jumping off the tower into the water so she had to do the same.

This is definitely a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Not any beach around this island. The shoreline is basically lava rock. Good view of the cruise ships going in and out and it is also a leisurely place to stroll and picnic.

Coconut Island gives you a nice view of Hilo. It was cloudy or we may have seen Mauna Kea. There are restroom facilities and picnic tables. Seems like a local hangout. Nice place to take a stroll across the bridge and view the water and bay and feel the ocean breeze.

Went here to see the sunrise. Was foiled by clouds. Enjoyed turtle watching instead. There are some interesting markings on some of the palm trees indicating the heights of past tsunamis.
