We came here around mid morning. We didn't see a rainbow and then I found out the best time to go kids early morning. Out had been thinking for weeks here and the water looked brown. Mainly because of much and fort being washed from high river. We didn't take the stair hike and was fairly pleased with what we... More

About one mile west of Hilo, after a hard rain (which frequently occurs) Rainbow Falls thunder into a gorge, often creating rainbows in the mist.

We stopped on our way to Mauna Kea. We didn't see any rainbows. We took a couple of pretty pictures and left. I prefer Akaka Falls.

We arrived at around 10am and couldn't turn into the parking lot..it was jammed! The falls are pretty, as all falls are, but others are nicer...and there was no rainbow! The walk to the top had some beautiful vegetation. It was a decent stop...not a favorite. Very glad it was free!

Park right next to waterfall but do not leave valuables in the car. Waterfall is very nice but viewing is obstructed by overgrown plants at the observing platform - better view closer to the carpark. Boiling pots close by we could hardly see because of the overgrown plants. Worth a look

Drive up to this waterfall in the town of Hilo, park, walk 50 steps, take picture, get back in car and move on.

We went to Rainbow Falls first because it was 10 minutes from out hotel. Nice waterfall and the hike to the top and out onto the rocks was fun, especially through the forest and the gigantic Banyan trees. Glad we went her BEFORE Akaka falls because it would have been a disappointment had we gone here second. Worth a look... More

This water fall was really pretty. Had a little problem seeing the falls due to the plants in the viewing area being tall. Was worth the stop.

Beautiful falls! Cool banyan trees! We hike a short way down to the top of the fall and climbed the rocks to get a closer view. Lots of fun and very exciting.

I love waterfalls and I enjoyed this one a great deal. It's just a couple miles west of Hilo and well worth the time and distance to get there. It's free to get in, and there is a nice view of the falls and a nice walk up the sout6hern side of the stream to a location above the falls.... More
