Some of the most beautiful driving you will ever do

Start in Hawi or Waimea - either option has something to do. A stunning vista throughout - bring your camera - stop a few times and take it all in.

I'd never heard of this referred to as the Kohala Mountain Road, but now I know. If traveling to/from Hawi or Pololu, one must definitely take this route in at least one direction; I think the route toward Waimea is the most scenic direction.

My oh My, I guess I have been living little Kauai for too long. The drive alone the upper ridge of Kohola was really nice. We stopped at a pull over and had a light lunch. The birdsong and views were amazing. Nobody tailgated! boy, I love big island. Seemed like everywhere we went folks engaged us and were sweet,... More

This is a narrow, winding road that connects North Kohala with Kamuela and the east side of the island. It is used by folks going to and from work as well as going to additional shopping areas, schools, other medical services, etc. The point here is that this road is well-used by all. It is not just a "view" road.... More

In our attempt to see as much of the Big Island as we could in one week, we drove a loop from the South Kohala coast, north to the end of the road at the Pololu Lookout, back through Hawi, down the Kahola Mountain Road, through Wiamea and back to the coast. Amazing diversity of climates from the hot-ish coast,... More

The road was slow and winding through some pretty farm lands. Amazingly healthy looking pastures, horse and cattle herds. It was wonderful until we came upon several bicyclers. There are no shoulders and many hidden corners. Not a road that should have motorized and non motorized traffic. I'm always respectful of others and only passed when safe for both us... More

We hired a bike in Waimea and rode the Kohola Road which is challenging but the views every turn are breathtaking. The road is not very busy so the ride was fantastic. We stopped in a couple of the ranches and finished with a great lunch in Bamboo.

We decided to try the Kohola Mountain Road to get to Hawi on the Big Island of Hawaii. We left sunny Mauna Kea beach to drive up to near the volcano. The higher we went, the cloudier it became. Soon we were in the rain and it continued all the way to Hawi and then half way back to the... More

Very scenic. Make sure you go to the end to visit the Polulu Trail. If you get lucky, you may see the wild horses.

The drive from Hawi to Waimea (or vice-versa, but Hawi to Waimea looks into some spectacular views of the volcanic mountains south of Waimea) is a beautiful, easy drive on a somewhat windy two lane paved road. The trip allows one to enjoy a changing panaromic vista of upcountry ranch lands overlooking huge views towards the ocean, Maui across the... More
