One of the most spectacular bird observation experiences anywhere!! Late afternoon is best opportunity to observe toucans, parrots, oropendolas, trogons, aracaris as well as the macaws in flight.

I visited the centre as part of my volunteering trip for the ARA project which breeds Scarlet and the endangered Great green macaws and releases them at various sites in Costa Rica. Whilst the centre is now rather tired and is soon to relocate, it is set in lovely gardens and gives an excellent opportunity to see these wonderful birds... More

We visited the original location in Alajuela, so I have to assume that most other people are visiting the release sites that have better experiences. This place was absolutely filthy and run down, honestly disgusting. They have a pack of at least 20 dogs to "guard" the place, and I was scratched to the point of bleeding by one that... More

Our visit to the ARA Project was the highlight of our trip! The ARA Project is a non profit organization that breeds and releases Macaws into the jungles of Costa Rica. Macaws are so endangered that seeing them in the wild can be tricky. At one time, Macaws could be found all over Costa Rica but due to deforestation and... More

We went to the ARA project right after flying into Arenal. We did the 2 hour tour. It was interesting hearing about the animals they had. They had a lot of bird. The best part of the tour for our kids ages 11 was that they were able to hold the baby capuchin monkey.

Love birds? Visit the ARA Project Breeding Center for a very up close and personal visit with Scarlet and Great Green Macaws, Costa Rica's 2 native species. Unfortunately, they are hard to spot in the wild and usually quite far away for picture taking, but the ARA Project's goal is to change all that through captive breeding of animals unable... More

The Ara Project is located in Alajuela just north of the SJO airport. Its located in the neighborhood of Rio Segundo and a bit hard to find for tourists but if you're trying to get there and lost just ask around and the people will guide you to it. They do have a big sign outside that says "The Ara... More

A friend knew about ARA and 3 of us visited this week. They lovingly care for over 50 scarlet and great green (military) macaws that have been kept in captivity and then abandoned or have come to ARA because of injury in the wild. The project allows the birds to mate if they choose and live their lives as a... More
