Nice ride. Surface crushed limestone satisfactory for road or mountain bikes. Very gradual inclines and declines leading to / from tunnels on otherwise flat trail. Segment from Elroy to Kendall is fairly open, from Kendall to Sparta beautiful rolling hills. Tunnels break up the ride nicely, offer a cool break on a hot day.

Great bike trail that takes you through forest as well as farm fields. 3 train tunnels which require you to walk your bike through. Don't forget your flashlight. Trail is 32 miles with gradual hills.

My wife and I spend four days in Wilton which is half way between Elroy and Sparta. The trail is beautiful and well taken care of. Only cost $4 a day per person or $20 for a season. It was easy to access. Passes can be purchased at local stores. Bring a good light for the tunnels. There are 3... More

Rode here on 4th of July, not too busy. Started in Sparta at depot paid $4 each for day paces. it is about 9 miles gradual up hill to tunnel ( approx. 3/4 of a mile long tunnel). tunnel is dark so flashlights are needed and wet from dripping water, but ok on a hot day. then about 3- 4... More

Overall it's a great trail. $4 for a day pass. We spent 2 days. First we went from Norwalk to Kendall about 30 miles round trip. Wonderful scenery, even saw an Amish buggy on the highway. Went through the 2 shorter tunnels on this ride. Second day we ride from Sparta to Norwalk about 25.5 miles round trip. The first... More

We were staying in Tomah, about 20 mi north of Wilmont. Wilmont is a little town and the trail head was easy to find with ample parking and a nice caboose visitor center. Signs alerted us to the fact that we needed a trail pass. I hoped we could get them in the caboose, however it was unmanned. Lots of... More

This trail has been on our 'to do' list for a while. We found the trail easy to get to and took off from the Sparta Depot, which has bathroom facilities. There was plenty of parking when we arrived, but saw people parking on the street when we arrived back at the depot about mid afternoon. Check the trail maps... More

I was reliving my tour of this trail from 1980 when it was the only bike trail in the midwest. We had a beautiful day to ride 36 miles from Elroy back to our B&B in Sparta. The trail and tunnels are maintained in excellent condition. We stopped along the way in Norwalk for lunch.... the only minus would be... More

Not a fan of this trail. It is crushed limestone that is very dusty. Our bicycles water bottles were constantly covered in dirt. Not much along the trail as far as places to get fresh water, snacks or food. This trail would be beautiful if it was paved. Not many people out on it for a sunny, warm Saturday.

During our Stay-cation of Monroe- County, one must visit the Elroy-Sparta Touring Trail. Bikes in the summer- snowmobiling and hiking in the Winter. This trail was the first of its kind in the United States - the reclaiming of a railroad bed. Over 30 miles long- bikes are available for rent in the summer. The trail moves around thru the... More
