The Clearing is without a doubt a wonderful, unique place, by trees, water, and nature, with lovely old wood and stone buildings, and a peaceful atmosphere. It offers a wide variety of courses, and like any courses, some are good and some are great. I've had both. In my first experience there, I was a commuter and therefore had my... More

If you wish to have an experience of a life-time--go to the Clearing. It is entirely unique and absolutely incredible. Now, this is from a man who has traveled 49 of 50 states and seen many wonderful places. First of all, it was created by and for Jens Jensen who created the Forest Preserves of Chicago land---one of the few... More

We happened upon The Clearing by accident. We read an article in the local Door County paper that morning about the recent documentary made about Jens Jensen. My fiance, a horticulturist and landscape designer and builder, is a student and follower of the theories of natural landscape and design. When we noticed the small sign on the gated entryway reading,... More

In the room in which the wonderful Jerry Apps holds his one-day writing workshop has six panels sharing the history and context of The Clearing Folk School in Ellison Bay. Jens Jensen, founder, explains the "name" The Clearing: "The name signifies the school's real purpose ... to clear away all debris of overstuffed learning, steeped form and tradition and get... My friend and I attended a day-long workshop with Roger Kuhns, who has a Ph.D. in Geology but also has great skill at telling stories that are vivid and very humorous. Half the day we hiked around the large property of The Clearing, which is on the coastline of Green Bay. He was showing us examples of what he taught... More

If you ever have a chance to enroll for a weeklong class at the Clearing in Door County, WI, you won't regret it. Thanks to the foresight of a brilliant landscape architect, Jens Jensen, the Clearing sits on a gorgeous, unspoiled slice of northern WI on Ellison Bay. The accommodations are simple, clean and homey. The food is served family... More

Gorgeous grounds, rustic and lovely along the shores of Green Bay in the Door Peninsula. Excellent classes, comfy accommodations, and incredibly good food! A real vacation for adults, a place to clear your mind and find peace in nature. Outstanding experience!

Unless you are staying at the Clearing or taking a class, chances are you may miss this gem. Established by Jens Jensen, a genius who recognized the great beauty of Door County before most people could spell "green" and "environment". It was during the same period when he helped design and create some of Chicago's most-loved parks. If you have... More

For over 75 years the Clearing has been offering nature, art, creative classes in a woodland setting on the shore of Ellison Bay. Beautiful walking paths and historic buildings.

Who knew that Jens Jensen was up in Door County - go see for the setting and the building - but mainly for the philosophy (plus a good book store / gift shop)
