This historical bridge is a must do when in the area. The one lane passage crossing takes you across a stretch above a beautiful river with unique sounds and interesting wheel traction!

You can feel history when you drive over this bridge. If you have time you need to pull over and just touch the stones of history. When on the Wheeling island check out the water level of the many different floods.

The bridge is a National Historic Landmark and upon its opening in 1849 was considered one of the first suspension bridges across the Ohio. It has beautiful lines of cable and connects downtown Wheeling with Wheeling Island which has many interesting Victorian Houses. I only regret not being there to photograph at night with its display lighting.

An older gentlemen in my church told me about this bridge (less than a year ago) and as I was passing through Wheeling, WV I stopped to view it. It's an amazing bridge. It's so well built and appears to be in good shape. Hopefully it will remain in service for future generations! Joe Brewer Cayuga, IN 47928

Was cool to see this old bridge but was in a rundown neighborhood Only regret is there is nowhere on either side of bridge to pull off so you can look at it closer. Very congested area.

We walked across and then drove across. This is just amazing. Then we walked along the path below near the water. Very nice place.

On my way to Oglebay yesterday saw this bridge and drove across it, then took photos of it, in the mid 1800s the longest suspension bridge in the world for 2 years, very beautiful bridge amongst the decay and rust of Wheeling.
