Although I went on a general tour it ended up being more of a ghost tour. Not because the guide intended it but because doors wouldn't open as we tried to go through. Doors came open when no one was around. But back to the review. The building is in descent shape considering how old it is. The guide gave... More

Try interesting tour. This place was eerie, creepy, frightening, historic and interesting. The whole family was interested and enjoyed the tour. We are definitely going back at night.

We took the guided tour with our guide, a former guard, Chuck. It was such a fun, interesting, informative and at times creepy, afternoon. I loved the stories, the architecture, and look forward to returning for a night time ghost hunt.

Construction began on this massive Gothic structure in 1866 and the history behind it makes Alcatraz look like Sunday school. In addition to being one of the worst prisons of the time there is evidence that West Virginia Penitentiary is haunted. That should not come as a surprise as it has seen the execution of 94 men by hanging or... More

We drove 3.5 hours to see the penitentiary and it was worth it. We loved hearing the stories and seeing the prison. It really is quiet the structure. Each sandstone hand carved out and built by the inmates. The little museum type area is neat to. Spend some time in that area reading some stories about the 1986 riot, the... More

My son was in a baseball tournament and we had time to kill between games so we took the tour. The tour guide was great. He had a lot of stories to tell us about the place. They kept the place intact. To bad we couldn't go up to where the warden lived I heard it's haunted.

The tour guide was very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and told us some great stories about the Penitentiary. I enjoyed the historical aspect and the unique experience. There were some movies and or TV shows that were filmed here. This place is definitely worth a visit.

We took a special trip to Moundsville from Charleston, WV just to visit here. We had went to the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum a few years ago and knew this was somewhere we wanted to see as well. We took the daytime history tour. Our guide (I'm afraid I don't remember her name) was great and very knowledgeable. It was... More

Our tour guide Ralph was wonderful! We were entertained, educated, and yes, creeped out at times. He told us many stories and even some updates of the prisoners. The architecture of the building is stunning. Definately worth the time and cost.
