With family members visiting, I thought this would be a fun thing to do. (This is my 4th time!) It never disappoints! My mother-in-law had a good time, and even got her picture taken in a cell! (she's 77!) The tours not that expensive, and we were lucky enough to have a former guard giving the tour. She is one... More

The tour was led by a former guard at the penitentiary, and his stories kept us fascinated. Throughout the massive facility, we stood where both inmates and guards once stood as we learned the incredible tales of the building, prisoners, wardens, and riots. It's a great tour for the money.

Please check to see if the Marshall County Tourism “Bundle Package” 30-day pass is beneficial for you at www.mcwvadventures.com. I was told about it at my last Moundsville tourist destination and was very disappointed that no one at the Penitentiary mentioned this money saving opportunity upon arrival. I confirmed a 10am tour on their website but when we got there,... More

Maggie was our great tour guide. She worked for 10 years at the prison as a correctional officer so she was very knowledgeable and made the tour a very interesting one.

Went for an overnight ghost hunt this weekend. It's so big I need to return to finish exploring all the areas that I wanted to. The staff is knowledgable and obviously care about the building and its stories. The upkeep of this old building is done well, very clean. Would like to go back for a day tour but highly... More

The sheer size of the building was enough for me, then we actually took the tour and I was even more impressed. Our tour guide was very knowledgable since she worked first hand in the prison. The stories were incredible and the building and architecture was a treat to see. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone, especially since... More

This closed state penitentiary has tours that are a little long, conducted by former officers who worked there. The tour took 1 1/2 hours, and could have been slightly shorter, but the man had very interesting personal and historical stories about the prison. You can get locked in a cell, which was actually scarier than I thought it would be,... More

I've lived in West Virginia for 48 years and had never been to Moundsville to visit the State Penitentiary. We visited last week for the first time and had an amazing tour. It is overwhelming, and worth a second visit to see what you missed the first time. They offer haunted tours, but we took a regular historic walking tour.... More

A step back in time with an informative tour guide (former prison guard) named Chuck. He took me through the prison grounds and narrated a rich history of the prison from the early days of construction all the way to the prison's closure in 1995. The artwork by the prisoners is both stunning and disturbing. The size of the cells... More
