It was a fun place to visit on a trip, but nothing outstanding. There is a lot of interesting history and artifacts. The tour guide was helpful and taught us a lot about the prison. Fun place to stop and definitely don't miss it if you're in the area.

Historical information was good, but if you are going because you want to see the locations seen on TV (Travel Channel, Ghost Adventures, etc) and any haunted areas like the Sugar Shack you will be extremely disappointed. You can't get anywhere near those places unless you take a night time tour. Very disappointing for me; we went yesterday (my birthday)... More

The day tour of the penitentiary was really great. An informative history of the prison and it's inmates, it was very cool to walk through and get to see go into the cells and other areas that the prisoners lived in. I thought there'd be more talk of the paranormal aspects, but there were only a few mentions. If you're... More

We have heard about this place for many years as children wanting to come for the haunted penitentiary so we were in the area and decided to stop and see what it was about. I knew it was an old prison but had no Idea about the history of this place or anything so we decided to take the guided... More

Paid to do the tour and was blown away by the stories and images. You get a full sense of what life might have been like locked up here 'back in the day'. You get the creeps, chills, etc. I've known people who pay to stay the night and are way creeped out!

This was a last minute getaway trip and probably one of the best! Our tour guide, Rick, was very outgoing and knowledgeable about the facility. His stories were so interesting and great that I am planning another tour with some of our friends. Thank you Rickl!

Took the morning day tour which was great. We learned a lot of history and our tour guide was great also. Glad we went in the morning because it was already hot on the tour. We went back the same night for the twilight tour. We got to see much more of the penitentiary with a guide and then on... More

My husband and I visited the West Virginia Penitentiary from Kentucky on 13 Aug 2015 and had an amazing time. I had investigated there before but my husband had never been. We first toured with Rick and then took a later tour with Chuck. The tours were very different from one another but that's what we were hoping for. Both... More
