My husband and I recently took a tour of the West Virginia State Penitentiary - it was awesome! Our tour guide Ralph was very informative and his presentation of the material gave us a true feel for the history surrounding this horrific place. If you're a history buff or have an interest in America's criminal justice system, put this attraction... More

My husband and I were excited about this tour and hoping to learn some history. We did but it was very difficult understanding our guide and she had a very unique sense of humor which only she seemed to find amusing. She also had a very monotone way of speaking which made it sound as she was very bored with... More

This tour was awesome. I learned so much! We went to the tour during the day, but I'd love to go back for a ghost tour. Would definitely recommend this to anyone!

Visited the prison for a glass show and sale that was being held in the great room. Amazing location. Take the tour and learn the history of this old history laden facility.

Loved that you were allowed to explore everything, within reason of course. Even the teenagers were interested, so that was a plus. We definitely want to do the overnight tour, so we'll be back.

My husband and myself went to the overnight ghost hunt this past weekend. At first glace of the prison we were left breathless. Such a huge place and rich in history. The tour they take you through before you are left to explore on your own seemed rushed. The prison itself has plenty of bats flying around and in peoples... More

This was a good tour and an interesting place to see. Our tour guide had a unique historical perspective on this place. His mother came from a long line of men who did time at this Pen and his father was a prison guard here following in the footsteps of many of the men in his family. To hear the... More

Visited a year ago and had an awesome experience with a very informative and knowledgeable guide, which led to my infatuation with the prisons history. Toured again yesterday and was disappointed. The tour guide rushed through the tour and offered very little information.. So much that the tour ended about 15 minutes early. And despite encouraging the group to ask... More

I can't say enough great things about the old Penitentiary. Day tours are fabulous, see a 100 year old institution as it used to be. Imagine how inmates lived packed into small spaces and worked while trying to stay alive in one of the most violent prisons in the United States. During the Halloween season this is the site of... Although I went on a general tour it ended up being more of a ghost tour. Not because the guide intended it but because doors wouldn't open as we tried to go through. Doors came open when no one was around. But back to the review. The building is in descent shape considering how old it is. The guide gave... More
