We only ventured to the lookout tower but really enjoyed reading about the history of this mountain and the role that it played during the Civil War. Next visit we will see the rest of the park.

The title says it all. You must take a trip up to the observation tower. You will be blown away by the view of the mountains. It almost made me dizzy!

This place is just natural therapy! Just sit there and be, take a look around, feel the history. We have a family reunion every year across the street and we always go to tower and just run around the park. I miss it already. If you are a traveler, go, if you are a local, I hope you know what... We were pressed for time so only spent time at the overlook. Great view to the north of the valley. Few options for food or fuel nearby so plan with that in mind. Probably a good spot for stargazing.

Bring a picnic lunch, climb the TOWER for awesome views. There wasn't alot to do here but it's right on the main highway and affords a great view of the area. Bring a quilt and a picnic lunch to enjoy under the shade of the huge trees.

We came after about 5-7 inches of fresh snow fall and with a wind chill factor below zero. The road to tower was closed. We parked at a closed entrance and hoofed it to the lookout tower. Well worth the bitter cold walk with cranky kids. The loved the tower. Luckily there are bathrooms there too! Places to picnic and... More

Very interesting! There are several trails to hike and very nice picnic areas. The view from the tower is beautiful! The museum is small, but very informative! You can spend most of the day if you like to hike and have a picnic!

We hit this park on our Hillsboro/Marlinton trip. The hike (or drive) following a dirt path along the mountain ridge is easy and informative. Following along with the informational stops gives you a sense of feeling as to what happened during that battle. Let your imagination go while you are in the battlefield. The walk is about an hour depending... More
