although it was a cold rainy (snowy) day we had a lovely 6 1/2 hr ride on the train. The scenery is BEAUTIFUL and our guides and train associates were great. We suggest if you're traveling in fall/winter take warm clothes and a blanket to stay warm. The train is old and drafty. More

This train follows the Cheat River through the West Virginia Mountains ending at the High Falls for a scenic wander about. The ride, scenery and commentary were excellent. We opted for the lunch ticket and were treated to a buffet sandwich bar. This was deliciuos and ample. For a few dollars more you could sit in the parlour car for... More

D &GV RR actually runs three separate trains: 1. New Tygart Flyer 2. Cheat Mountain Salamander 3. Durbin Rocket In addition, there is a Dinner Train (called the Mountain Explorer) that is basically the Cheat Mountain Salamander. The three trains all originate and travel different locations -- all in the Elkins and Durbin areas. In mid-October, I had the pleasure... More

Dinner train - 1st visit many years ago and last actual trip was 2009. But last year was scheduled for my wife and I to go on the same Dinner Train Oct'10 but an unexpected heavy snowfall in the mountains - many inches not just a dusting -- made it ill advised to risk a brand new car on mountain... I have visited many attractions all over the USA, Japan, German and Australia. I believe that this could be a very informative and interesting rail trip. They had no control of where people sat which meant that people who purchased tickets for the open car were taking seats in the covered cars. From the very beginning to the end of... More

We went the first week in October on a weekday. The trees were just beginning to turn. There were only about 20 people on the train so we could ride in any and all cars, even the caboose, as the cars have metal platforms between them. The dining car (an old converted mail car) and the caboose were heated. The... More

This trip was very disapointing. The setting was uncomfotable and very confined. We went as a family of four and ended up sitting on opposite ends of the train because there was barely enough sitting and the tickets didn't designate the seats. The "dining car" is nothing more than folding tables and cheap chairs. The food was okay but they make... More

Wow, we went on Cass day before and this is just as good. Its good in a different way. Cass is more historic and loud and well its steam....This is more higher class style, going somewhere atmosphere. The scenery is awesome, your running along side a nice river with water falls, including the stop at a really neat water fall,... More

The Durbin Greenbrier Valley Railroad's New Tygert Flyer is an excellent way to enjoy West Virginia's mountainous scenery. The train has a parlor car (first-class) and coach options. The coach fare is $30 per adult. You can choose to sit in the club car or the normal seating car. It's ideal, but not necessary, to get there early to get... More
