This is a must see if you are ever in Charleston, West Virginia. We are traveling a lot in 2015 for business so we are making it a mission to seek out State Capitols so that we can take pictures in front of them. This has a beautiful gold domed Capitol. The memorials and historic plaza were wonderful and we... More

After visiting 44 state capitols this one is the most beautiful dome so far! The building far exceeded my expectations. The interior is not as impressive as some but the dome definitely is tops! The 30 minute tour was informative. Don't miss the state museum/culture center which is right next to the capitol.

I have been to the Capitol several times with friends and with school groups. If one is a West Virginian, one ought to see the Capitol. For someone who doesn't know anything about the building there are free half hour tours that can be scheduled: otherwise one can explore the main parts at leisure. The Capitol overlooks the Kanawha River.... More

We made reservations in advance to tour the Capitol building. The tour was very informative and interesting. It takes about 30 minutes. We should have also made reservations to tour the governors residence but we didn't. I recommend doing both while you are there. Be sure to get to your car before your meter runs out!! We saw cars get... More

This Capitol wasn't as good as some of the others I have seen, but it was still interesting. There were no tour guides, which was good and bad. We were able to go at our own pace, but I feel like we missed out on some of the little details that only tour guides share. There were several other things... More

The West Virginia State Capitol is a beautiful building both inside and out. We were a little disappointed that no tours were offered on our recent stop (not sure why--the sign on the visitors desk just said no tours were available, without further explanation), but there is a map that explains the different sections of the building for a self-guided... Years ago, I worked for the State of West Virginia, and the building was on the Capitol Complex. (I'm from Ohio, and after 15 years, I still want to use the term "Statehouse.") A lot of the freeway traffic through Charleston includes people going to the beach or east coast. It's difficult to miss the gold dome on the Capitol.... More

When we visited there was a wedding taking place and we couldn't find anyone around to ask about guided tours.

Whether you are a West Virginian or not the capitol complex should be of interest. The state cultural complex which is superior is there and the history and beauty of the capitol is unsurpassed. Though was not available this trip there are guided tours available and there is not the feeling of security watching every move. Just a comfortable feeling... More
