After seeing the gold dome many times on our way through Charleston, we decided to stop and visit the capitol building. The tour they offer is free and metered parking is available on site. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the capital cities and the capitol buildings throughout history. The tour only goes through a few... More

The capitol was the icon of the city where I lived for seven years of my life. The statistics of this beautiful building are well known: the height of the dome, the architect, the gold leaf--which had "disappeared" for a while I lived there as an adolescent. In this last visit my Cicerone was a friend who works in the... More

Parking can be a little difficult but if the Legislature is not in session it is OK. The Capitol is one of the most beautiful State Capitols in our nation. It's beauty begins with the gold dome on the exterior. The grounds are always very attractive. The interior of the building is breath taking. If you've never been you need... More

Very nice building. We didn't get a chance to go in to see the inside, but we toured around the grounds.

The area around the Capitol is beautifully landscaped. We were able to wander through the Capitol itself, even being able to peak into the Governors office.

This is a very beautiful building in a very impressive complex of local government buildings. We didn't do an official tour but were thrilled to be welcomed by a long serving delegate. He took us to the House of a Delegates and explained the procedures that take place there. We even sat in his chair to have our photo taken.... More

Important tip: The capitol and tour, and the museum, are free but parking requires 2 quarters per hour. We had to go to a nearby store for change for the five quarters we estimated we needed. If you go to the museum and spend significant time then you may need more. This is certainly worth a stop and some time... More

We were passing through Charleston and had read about the State Capitol Building. This is a beautiful building which you can freely walk through most of. The doors to both the state legislature and senate rooms were open, and there is plenty of historical info posted in the form of pictures, plaques and statues inside and outside the building. Be... The Capital grounds are never more beautiful than when filled with musicians. The music, the camaraderie, the food, the arts & crafts….my favorite festival in WV!
