We saw "Much Ado About Nothing" here on a Friday night in October. The production was fantastic. The actors did an excellent job in keeping with the integrity of the play while adding in modern but appropriate tidbits. Tickets may seem like a lot for a small local theater but it's well worth it and they offer student, senior, military,... more

Attended Much Ado About Nothing at the Blackfriars in June, Sunday afternoon. It was wonderful. Hilarious! Shakespere with a modern touch. Actors were great. Also they performed folk music before and at intermission. Sat in general admission section on second level front row. Seats were much more comfortable than I thought and view was great. Would recommend this to all... more

My husband & I have been to the Blackfriars now to see five plays, and are returning this week for our sixth performance. The theatre is so evocative - the lighting, music, intimacy - and the acting quite passionate and professional. The quirky music numbers in between acts by the cast are so much fun. We will continue to patronize... more

My wife is a big fan of Shakespeare/Elizabethan/Jacobean theater but I was always dismissive of it. After seeing Henry VI, Part I at the Blackfriars I began to change my tune. We then returned to see The Changeling and The Revenger's Tragedy. I totally became hooked. The performers are excellent (and they are great musicians too). We just returned from... more

My senior high students really enjoy seeing Shakespeare's works come alive at the Blackfriars. We make a point of going each year, and every class has an ethusiastic response. Although the comedic/sexual overtones may be stressed more than originally intended, it does captivate the students' attention. Kudos to the performers. I don't know how they do it! more

American Shakespeare Theatre, the BlackFriars Playhouse is amazing. I didn't think I'd like it since whenever I've seen Shakespeare it hasn't been very good. I started going because I was taking a Shakespeare class, but I'm still going 4 years later! These actors are incredible. All my friends have their favorite actor but it would be difficult to argue that... more

Wow! I'm not a Shakespeare fan, but my wife is. However, I had a fantastic time, and my wife was just amazed at seeing the Bard performed in this element. Blackfriar's takes the plays and uses the original stage direction to show them without major scenery and extensive props. Basic items like chairs and handheld items are used with brilliant... more

The Blackfriars Playhouse was a wonderful experience - I'm so thrilled that we stumbled upon their website! We were staying at the Massenutten resort, which was about a 45 minute drive through beautiful Virginia farm land. I booked my tickets in advance for "Twelfth Night" by phoning their ticket box office. They offer a AAA discount that is only available... more

As an Englishman, I was slightly worried about hearing the Bard's great verse in an American accent. I was completely wrong! This is a vibrant theatre with some of the finest Shakespeare I've ever seen. The small company doubled-up where necessary, with girl's playing men where necessary, but the atmosphere, acting and delivery were absolutely brilliant. The building is a... more

We went to the Black Friars Playhouse last night to see "As You Like It". We've seen the play many times in various milieus and last night's performance compared very favorably with the other productions. The theater was small and one could get an excellent view of the stage from most vantage points. The performance was scheduled to start at... more
