Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”. « less

A very different, intimate theater experience - designed to be more like what the experience was in Shakespeare's time. If you can go one of the tours, you will understand a lot more about the experience of the original performances. We were so impressed with MacBeth on Friday we saw Cyrano on Saturday!!

Loved the theater -- small-scale and a wonderful reproduction of a 16th Century London theater. The production was professional and made Shakespeare really come alive.

We took the backstage tour in the afternoon and saw a wonderful production of the Comedy of Errors in the evening. The recreation of Shakespeare's Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton reproduces authentic elements of Elizabethan theatrical staging, including a thrust stage, with audience members on three sides, and gallants' stools on the stage--stools around and in the midst of the action.... For the past five summers, Jerry, Rachel, Ann and I have come up to Staunton to performances at the Blackfriars Theatre. We always have a good time, enjoy the plays and the theatre. This is a place for fun not for fine Shakespeare such as the Folger Shakespeare Theatre in Washington. People here bring their kids and dress in jeans... More

We went to a play. The play was great, but seating on the balcony was on flat boards, with no back support. Spend the extra $ for real seats.

Here's a secret: If you think you don't like Shakespeare, it's because you haven't seen classical theatre in the hands of those who really know and understand it. The masterful direction of these professional actors leaves everyone satisfied. The Blackfriars Theatre-- a recreation of Shakespeare's own-- is unique in itself. Combine that with specific staging elements and actors who know... More

Prior to visiting Staunton I had no idea that the city had a shakespeare theater. Took in an afternoon play and had a great time! The theater is an historic reproduction of the Blackfrier's theater in London, and is worth seeing just for that fact alone. The audience was fully engaged in the play and several audience members were sitting... More

As people who have seasons tickets to the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, one of the greatest Shakespeare theaters anywhere, I'm very picky about my Shakespeare. We went to see Cyrano de Bergerac at this theater and thought the production was wonderful. This production measured up to the one that the national Theatre had done a number of years ago with... The American Shakespeare Theatre offers amazing backstage tours. In our visit to Staunton, we got a tour, learned about the building and the original Blackfriars theatre in England, saw the stage, met the costume designer, learned about the actors, and learned how to produce a Shakespearian play. Our tour guide was experienced and informed. We enjoyed our tour and would... More

I have been attending shows at Blackfriars for well over seven years. I started going with my school on field trips for my theatre and English classes. Now that I'm in college, I still find myself buying tickets and making a point of going back to this awesome theatre. This past June, I got to see the final performance of... More
