The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

Fantastic! My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening of "Much ado about Nothing". In fact, we enjoyed the experience so much we went back the next night for "Hamlet". The cast is multi-talented, including playing various musical instruments, singing and dancing in musical performances before the play and during intermission. The actors interact with the audience during the play.... More

As a first time visitor to Staunton we so enjoyed the intimate performance of "Wittenburg" at Blackfriars Playhouse, home to the ASC. Performing a very ambitious schedule of Shakespeare and other plays, this young, energetic company offers a wonderful evening's entertainment at very reasonable prices.

We came from NY . Read great reviews. Thank you to the staff and actors. Saw Much Ado About Nothing one night and Hamlet the next. They were both amazing. Beautiful playhouse and so much fun!!! You shall be pleased!!! Sylvia Comiskey

My husband and I met years ago as English majors working in college theater. What a treat to get to attend a performance of Hamlet in this lovely theater some 55 years later. I had also attended the Christmas Carol here with my granddaughters last December. Both plays were so well done and the theater itself is so interesting. For... More

The American Shakespeare Center, also known as the Blackfriars, is a real treat to the theater goer. Not only Shakespeare's plays are performed. Even if you think you don't like or don't understand Shakespeare, set that aside and take in at least one play by the Bard here. The actors know how to interpret Shakespeare! I don't mean they change... More

My family and I took a tour of this facility at 11 am on a Monday. Unfortunately we weren't able to watch a show but we would have fit it in if we could. The only reason I am giving a 4 star review instead of 5 star is because we showed up on Saturday for a tour--the 11 am... More

This was my third time at the Blackfriar Playhouse and my husband's second and we have enjoyed each show so much. Best Shakespere theater and the talented actors perform musical numbers as well. Always a fun experience.

What a gem in the middle of Virginia! We saw a fabulous (funny!!!) production of Dr. Faustus. Can't wait to see them again in VA or on tour.

What a treasure to have this place in Virginia! We visited for the first time for the center's presentation of Mother Bombie. The play was excellent - what a talented group of individuals! The theatre is wonderful - a "Must Do' when in the area!

If you have the courage get seats on the stage. You'll be included as part of the play. You'll never forget the experience. Short of that get seats in the "lords chairs", front row. Good Seats and right on top of the play. But most of all GET SEATS. You'll never regret it.
