The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

The concept of presentation and the setting and the enthusiasm and the quality of the performance was so good when we went there that I will consider Staunton as a stopping by point in future when I can get their future schedules

Go on with an open mind and get ready to smile. It is simply a great way to spend an evening (or afternoon). My two teenagers laughed like it was a teen movie and my wife and I loved it. Quirky and fun!

Have been here many times and this last time was "Pay what you will" which is a great deal for those that can't shell out the cash for a nice evening out. The actors are always exceptional, and if you're not especially in the mood for Shakespeare, they many times have other plays that are different and even fun. There... More

Most people either love or hate 'The Bard' and his plays, the latter usually thanks to excruciatingly boring memories of high school English class! If you are a member of this large 'clan', this review is for you! If you are in or around charming Staunton, you must go to this wonderful theater and experience a Shakespeare play. The actors... I have seen all of Shakespeare's 38 plays, most of them several times at well known theaters in London, New York, Stratford, Ontario and Stratford-upon-Avon. My wife and I saw "Antony and Cleopatra" and my wife who does not share my passion with Shakespeare said after the performance that this is the first time that she really enjoyed a Shakespeare... Our first time there was last year. We took the tour / history lesson in the afternoon and came back for the evening show. I convinced my wife to sit in the no-extra-charge seats on-stage. It was Priceless, like being in one of the little 'box' theatres back in college. There is NO group of actors in the world more... More

I have never read a Shakespeare play--always used Cliff Notes in High School. Over the years and in my old age, I have become interested in theatre and especially Shakespeare. I like to listen to the language, enjoy the fine acting at ASC, and the unique experience ASC brings to a Shakespeare play. If your hesitant, pick a comedy or... More

I read so many fabulous reviews on TA that I knew I just had to make a detour to see a performance while in the area visiting Shenandoah National Park. The playhouse is stunning beyond words and our seats were terrific (right in the center of Row I). The cast was incredible providing a Shakespearean experience of such high quality... More

The currently running production of Winter's Tale is a splendid example of the consistently excellent work by the Blackfriars company. We have seen this Shakespeare play many times but this version brought out aspects we had missed in other productions. Sarah Fallon was fantastic as Paulina, Abbi Hawk was captivating as Hermione, and John Harrell provided his usual comedic tour... More
