The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

Not being fluent in verbal English, we were anxious before seeing "Midsummer dream" from Shakespeare... We had no problem at all to understand the trame of the show; the setting of this reconstructed theater is ideal, and the play of the actors are nothing less than excellent. We plan to comme back for more.

A beautiful theater with a wonderful repertory company performing plays year round. Great for Shakespeare-phobics.

The theatre is impressive with its chandeliers, seating arrangement and wood beams Actors were wonderful. I also enjoyed the pre-show and intermission entertainment. It's a must see experience

We attended Mid Summer Nights Dream and enjoyed every minute of it. The actors were extremely enthusiastic during their performances. The costumes, dances, and, humorous lines were fantastic. Look forward to returning to this beautiful theater.

Thoroughly enjoyed a rollicking good, sold-out SRO performance of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' this afternoon. There is nothing like this company anywhere. Repeat ANYWHERE. Whether you intended to come to Staunton or not, this is a must. If you're in Richmond, Charloteville or elsewhere nearby, it is a must. Or drive in from Baltimore or DC for a few notes... More

My husband & I each year since we have lived in central Virginia attend at least 6 performances of mostly Shakespeare plays at the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Virginia. It is fabulous each & every time! From the pre-show music to the plays themselves (all performed by the tireless cast), each experience will leave you wanting more. Speaking of... More

From the outside of the building there is little indication of the treasure within. The lobby is attractive - high ceilings, airy space, brick and glass - ah, but the treasure is behind those big wooden doors. Step through, and you are standing inside a replica of Shakespeare's Globe theater (with some modifications like no fleas or mice). It is... More

A fun evening, a talented cast. The audience seemed to love "A Winter's Tale." Recommended! Would do it again!

Saw a Winter's Tale. Theater is very unique and cast gives the performance their all. Definitely arrive early for the pre-show music and entertainment. They had us rolling in the aisles. We thought this production was one of the best we have seen and definitely theater like Shakespeare intended. There isn't a bad seat in the house and Stonewall Jackson... More

The tickets here are not terribly expensive, but I think there should be a wider range of prices. Getting to sit downstairs facing the stage is just a few dollars more than sitting in the second row of the 2nd floor balcony. Only problem is, the 2nd floor balcony seats can barely see any of the stage. Two thirds of... More
