Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”. « less

One of the secrets of this theater is that they have fun! We saw "Comedy of Errors"--with some parts in modern dress--and a short piece from "Westside Story"---which is based on "Romeo and Juliet". Seats are still hard-hard hard!

Saw a show (Merry Wives of Windsor) as part of a package from Stonewall Jackson Hotel. We took a tour of the theater earlier in the day, which gave us a good introduction to the theater and level of preparation that goes into producing a show. If you get there earlier the cast plays guitars and sings popular songs, and... More

We have attended several productions at the American Shakespeare Theater and all have been very enjoyable. The atmosphere is incredible and the actors both talented and engaging. We often buy a package which includes lodging and breakfast at the nearby Stonewall Jackson Hotel. It might be a good idea to brush up on your Shakespeare before the performance. Then you... More

This is a great theater and company in a fabulous town. I saw their production of Macbeth on Friday and it was easily one of the best Shakespeare productions I have seen, and I have seen a lot. If you are anywhere close to Staunton, it would be a shame to miss it.

The American shakespeare Center is a replica of an indoor theater at the time of the Bard. The atmosphere is fun and full of song and dance before the plays complete with drinks offered on stage to enjoy during the preformance. The lights are kept on as they were orginally and patrons are invited to sit on stage where the... More

A very different, intimate theater experience - designed to be more like what the experience was in Shakespeare's time. If you can go one of the tours, you will understand a lot more about the experience of the original performances. We were so impressed with MacBeth on Friday we saw Cyrano on Saturday!!

Loved the theater -- small-scale and a wonderful reproduction of a 16th Century London theater. The production was professional and made Shakespeare really come alive.

We took the backstage tour in the afternoon and saw a wonderful production of the Comedy of Errors in the evening. The recreation of Shakespeare's Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton reproduces authentic elements of Elizabethan theatrical staging, including a thrust stage, with audience members on three sides, and gallants' stools on the stage--stools around and in the midst of the action.... For the past five summers, Jerry, Rachel, Ann and I have come up to Staunton to performances at the Blackfriars Theatre. We always have a good time, enjoy the plays and the theatre. This is a place for fun not for fine Shakespeare such as the Folger Shakespeare Theatre in Washington. People here bring their kids and dress in jeans... More
