The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

We went to see A Midsummer Night's Dream. It was my first trip to the theater. My wife had been here multiple times. I expected this experience to be one of those "culturally significant" type things. I ended up having one of the best nights I've ever had as an audience member. The show was exceptional. Given this is a... More

The performance was "The Winter's Tale," a play with which we were not familiar. Lack of familiarity might have been cause for confusion, but the cast performed brilliantly and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Highly recommend this cultural attraction.

I've enjoyed several productions at ASC, attending both as a couple and with a large family group. Assuming you pick age appropriate material, ASC is a wonderful place to introduce anyone to Shakespeare. The theatre is intimate and the cast involves the audience in the play. You will enjoy yourself.

An incredible cultural goldmine. I will follow them as they travel. We saw Dr. Faustus (first time for me)--they did it in a funny and contemporary way. I highly recommend seeing them in VA--but if you can't get there. Find their travel schedule.

What a magical place! A reproduction of Shakespeare's Blackfriars' Theatre...wonderful actors, marvelous production. We had third-row seats for the opening night of The Winter's Tale, and I've never been to a play where I felt so much a part of the action. We will be going back!

We had the pure joy of being in row B for opening night of The Winter's Tale. Employees and actors are genuine, professional, and whole heartedly put their all into every thing they do. The theatre feels authentic, looks original and is very comfortable. There is music prior to the play and throughout one intermission. Drinks are served from a... More

My girlfriend is from Staunton and on this years visit she dragged me to my first Shakespeare play. I have to admit it was incredible. The actors are true professionals and the building is amazing in detail. No visit to Staunton is complete with out a night or two at this wonderful event.

Saw Antony & Cleopatra in this intimate theater and loved every minute! Cast was phenomenal and the play would appeal to teenagers to seniors. You don't need to be an expert in iambic pentameter to enjoy the play. Friendly staff and actors and not a bad seat in the house. If sitting in front, be sure and get a cushion... More

If you come to Staunton you should experience this! I was not a big Shakespeare fan when I moved here but I am now. Everything I have seen here is wonderfully entertaining. Please take the opportunity to visit the American Shakespeare Center!!!

WOW! What a hidden treasure in a mountain town... We took in two of their summer productions: Anthony & Cleopatra and A Midsummer Night's Dream on separate evenings. Both were absolutely enjoyable... The theater goes for authenticity, so this is not a "formal" theater experience. The opening music is loud and the lights stay on. But it is enjoyable... my... More
