Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”. « less

We saw Henvy VIII, sat on the front row - what an awesome experience - it was as if we were on stage with actors and part of the story. The entire cast was captivating. They have SO much fun that it is contagious. If we'd had the time, we would have bought tickets for the evening performance. If you... More

Went with my son on a field trip and was able to experience Macbeth. I was enthralled with the performance and really enjoyed the cast. Of course we were able to take a backstage tour which only enhanced my opinion of the entire production. I highly recommend this theatre!

No bad seat in house and very talented production - wonderful. Creative and audience participation encouraged.

Saw "The Custom Of The Country", a comedy/drama. The Blackfriars theater is modeled after the original 1600's theater and is a real looker with great acoustics and every seat good. Prior to the show, various musicians and cast members played a variety of old and new pieces, both acoustic and electric. The house lights stayed up during the play (as... More

We stumbled on this theater just because Staunton was good place to break up our drive home from Asheville. What a lucky find! The acting was top-notch, and the building itself is stunning. I would seriously consider driving the four hours to stroll around the town and take in another play.

We go to Staunton mainly to see plays here. While two noble Kinsmen is never going to be my favorite Shakespeare play, it was refreshing to see something different for a change. The acting company here was excellent as always. This was our first time taking our 9 & 12 year old kids to this theater. We paid the extra... More

This replica of London's Blackfriars theatre is a great experience just to visit, but the acting company was superb. They do a lot of work with local schools, and mount productions around the region, but visiting the Shakespearean theater is the best way to understand the culture in which such great theater art and such a great playwright was nurtured... Claims to be only true-to-life period theater which is a lie (Shakespeare theater in D.C. looks exactly the same), but no matter - a great show, with nods to the present along with The Bard.
