Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”. « less

The productions of the company are topnotch and the theater is beautiful. Scenery and costumes are minimal as they would have been in Shakespeare's time. The company makes the plays relevant to our time. Since the size of the theater is more intimate than many theaters so it is easy to see the actors expressions which adds to the experience.... More

Our innkeepers arranged everything for us at The Staunton Choral Gardens. The theater is authentic. The performances we saw were first rate.

This is a top notch theatrical venue, performing just as it would have been done during Shakespeare's time. Excellent acting and directing. Good programs for kids and teens. Talk back with the actors on some nights. Pay what you will early in the season on some nights. Also check it out during the holidays when they take a break from... More

The actress did a great job. It was an excellent, well rehearsed, and funny solo performance. My husband and I weren't as crazy about the pre-show act, but the singer's voice was good, and it was cool to have a pre-show act in the first place. I loved the layout and the lighting. It was comfortable and intimate, yet still... More

What a great evening we had at the American Shakespeare Center's Blackfriar Playhouse. The play was first rate. The theatre is beautiful. It is reasonably priced. To remain true to Shakespeare, the lights are left up, so you can see the audience as well as the actors. From our seats to the side of stage you could see the majority... More

No time to go into everything that makes this place great. Don't think twice about going, though. Especially if you're looking for comedy, you will not be disappointed. Music, laughs, and general good cheer. Super highly recommended!

Well, the best because it's young, fresh, clever, accessible, incredibly reasonably priced, and intimate. They "do it with the lights on" - meaning as Shakespeare did, because you can't turn lights on and off in the 17th century. Great talent and energy. Don't miss it.

This is a really fun and interesting place. There were all ages in the audience and everyone was laughing and having a good time. Don't be deterred by the unpleasant memories you may have from trying to read King Lear in the 9th grade! If you had been introduced to Shakespeare here - you would have wanted more!

We're always on the lookout for something that's "not the same old thing" and this really qualifies--in spades. On the advise of the nice woman who answered the phone we got tickets for seats on the stage. I was nervous about that but hey, you only go once around in life. Turned out to be a good decision so I'll... More

You won't find Shakespeare done any better than this. And even if you are not familiar with Shakespeare's plays, you will still enjoy these productions. Don't miss this experience!
