The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

This experience was top notch. The venue is stunning, and the performance was outstanding. I couldn't have been more pleased with my seat (first level, stage right on the side) and I laughed until I cried then I laughed some more. (A Midsummer Night's Dream) Outstanding staff and outstanding cast & crew. The location is in downtown Staunton, with parking... More

This was our second show, and the experience was as stellar as the first. A theatre almost "in the round", lights stay on for the audience to be included in the performance, and certainly a part of the actors' improvisations. The actors are phenomenal: they act, sing, dance, play instruments; they perform before and between the acts. Tickets are pricey... More

The theater is a beautiful replication of actual Shakespeare theater in England and the woodwork is stunning. We saw Measure for Measure and the performance was wonderful - to me made even more so when the actors told us the minimal prep time they have to prepare and that they are doing multiple shows simultaneously at the theater. Then to... More

My wife and I saw a midsummer nights dream and the atmosphere was funny and private. The venue doesn't hold a lot of people and it makes the show that much more enjoyable. If you love Shakespeare you got to go!

What a pleasure to see a performance about the way Shakespeare would have originally been seen and heard. No light or audio boards, no sound reinforcement except for assisted listening devices and simple but elegant staging. It was opening night and "pay what you will" for their performance of "Women Beware Women". So glad I went and was surprised to... More

Fashioned to resemble the theater in England in Shakespeare's day, this is a wonderful attraction in the area. We plan at least one trip to see a play each trip we take to Virginia. The acting is fabulous and often the actors will incorporate members of the audience into the play. Drinks and snack are made available. We enjoy going... More

I've been wanting to see a play at this theater for as long as I can remember but I kept putting it off. I finally bought tickets and went last Friday to see "Measure for Measure." It was wonderful. What are you waiting for? Go. You won't regret it. We drove through the pouring rain to get there and then... More

The actors and actresses were excellent. Warm environment and great entertainment. My only problem was that a lot of the audience seem determined to talk and I thought were inconsiderate to others.

This is a must for theatre goers. The theatre space is designed with its patrons in mind. There are no bad seats in the house. I also recommend arriving early enough to be lucky enough to nab a seat on the stage!

This theater has brought me back again and again. The plays are always top notch. My first play, I didn't think I was a Shakespeare guy. The superb performances have changed me. The theater itself offers an intimacy that takes you right in to the story. Great place to relax and get away from the grind. I'm a season ticket... More
