I had wanted to go here for a while as I had heard that the grounds were beautiful... and beautiful they were! Some really unusual plants in a lovely country and homely setting. The views over the Weald of Kent were spectacular and memorable, and dare I say it, good for the soul. The house was full of interesting artifacts... More

We visited Sunday just gone. It was busy in the car park, but there was lots of space in the grounds in which to get lost and enjoy the gardens in particular. Stunning views and the gardens were well cared for. The staff (volunteers?) were all very friendly and helpful.

Unbelievable weather for a bank holiday Monday, plenty of sunshine. Arrived at 1pm and gates were closed as they were "full up". However after a wait of 10-15 minutes the gates were re-opened. Managed to see the wonderfully-maintained gardens and Studio, but could not go in the house as there is limited space and had to be booked - they... More

Just walking through the front door will give you goosebumps. Absolutely fantastic house and giving its position, you can see why Sir Winston Churchill chose it. The house is kept in a 1920/1930s style when the Churchill family were growing up and not as you would expect 1940's when the country was in the thick of it with Churchill at... More

Chartwell is a fabulous house full of wonderful mementoes of the Greatest Englishman Winston Churchill. But the overriding impression is of a warm family home. It really feels as if the family might be gathering for diner at any time. The house is populated with incredibly knowledgeable guides who are absolutely delightful. The gardens and long distance views are spectacular.... More

Churchill's country home and gorgeous gardens are well worth doing and cheaply by public transport - you can read all the blah about the house in other reviews! Sunday or a Bank Holiday are the only credible days. Buy a day travelcard for zones 1-6 (£16.40 or half that at £8.50 if you use an Oyster card) and train from... More

Well worth a visit. However, too many rooms in the house are given over to display cases rather than leaving them in their original state. Further, I was told not to take photographs in the house, although no reason was given as to why this was so. Nevertheless, the house was most interesting and provided a lot of information on... This is a place which oozes charm, and yet touches so many aspects of personal history. The guides in each room are excellent, take the time to talk with them. On a warmer day than we had, the gardens will be lovely.

What a treat our visit to Chartwell was, its been on the list for some time and did not fail to impress on every count. Beautiful house - visitor numbers are staggered so there is never a feeling of being overcrowded. So interesting and with such informative assistants/guides in every room it was just fascinating to hear some, unknown to... More

The guides at all National Trust Properties do such a good job and Chartwell is no different. As you walk through the lovely rooms you get to learn so much more by just chatting to the guides. The gardens are beautiful so its worth coming when its not raining ( if you have a choice!) We were here in spring... More
