Calem Port Wine Cellars

One of the many Cellars to visit but I really enjoyed it. Interesting history of Port in general and the brand in particular.

http://wp.me/p5Lw9a-6B Port wine comes from Porto, and therefore we must visit one of those wineries on the south side of the river. Many of them offer wine tasting, wine-brewing tours and stores. We ended up with two places. We joined a winery tour in Cálem,... which they gave us a tour around the premise and three difference kinds of wine... More

Porto Calem is the first wine cellar you'll see when crossing the bridge D. Luis I. Their english tour is excellent, affordable and the tasting room in the end of the tour makes the experience simply unforgettable.

When we went to Calem we found there weren't tours in English unless we paid 15€ more per person for a tour in English along with Fado show. We declined and they said we could specify the time for tomorrow and they would put the English tour on then, which they did at 4pm the next day. The guide was... More

You can combine all these three things in Calem! Cellartour was short but you will get basic information concerning Port wine. Fado concert after that was great!

We go for a Portuguese visit in the cellar, because we don't want to wait for the English one. The visit was short and fast, I have no time to take photos in the cellar. The wine was average, don't like so much, but some of the tourists leave their wine in the glass, than I think, it is not... More

If you're a foreign tourist (as I will assume if you're reading this in English) who's not knowledgeable about wine or Port I think it's a good tour - very minimalist, approaching only the most important aspects of Port Wine and it's production, does not give you time to get bored. If you're portuguese or a wine enthusiast with some... More

Great tour with a very knowledgeable tour guide. Wish the "museum" section was in English. Very nice layout and tour of the caves and ended with a nice tasting of two types of Port. Very good experience.

I can only compare this tour with those I have made at other similar high profile regions like Champagne and Cognac and this was the only cellar we visited in Vila Nova (although we had a good tasting at Kopke port boutique a few metres away. As with all these things, experiences are personal. Whether the fact we were visiting... More

Living in Australia near the Hunter Valley, a large wine producing area we have been to several wineries and done many tastings so we didn't expect anything particularly different from what we'd already experienced. We were very pleasantly surprised - tours are run in various languages throughout the day and it's worth ensuring you go on one in a language... More
