Ridiculously cheap entrance - 3 Euros or so and would rather have paid more to see the mosaics better protected. Entry into the villa requires walking over mosaics and, as the site is still being excavated, there are archaeologists working, tramping over the mosaics with gritty, hard boots. The number and range of mosaics here was way beyond our expectation and well worth the (for us) difficult drive from Agrigento. By all means, visit the Villa Romana del Casale! The mosaic floors are very beautiful, and well worth seeing. Keep in mind that as it is still very much an active archeological site, there may be some rooms which are closed off to the public from time to time. A vast roman villa buried by a landslide and found by accident in the 18th century. Room after room of stunning mosaic floors. Time Team would have apoplexy. A not to be missed experience. more

Not to be missed in Sicily are the mosaics at the Villa Romana del Casale, just outside the town of Piazza Armerina. We were there a little ahead of the season (mid-March 2005), and showed up as soon as it opened on a weekday morning, so we practically had the place to ourselves for the first 45 minutes or so... more
