Old venetian castle still inhabitated which reminds of the little old towns in Italy. There are few small museums worth seeing and also catholic churches.

Passing the main door you are entering the mysterious, medieval castle. The area of castle was the residence, the educational and religious center of the Venetian conquerors. In the center of the settlement of the castle is the square with the beautiful Catholic Cathedral and the ruins of the tower, which according to tradition is the palace of Sanudo. Next... More

Kastro is the old town of Naxos, which had been fortified by the Venetians in the 13th century. Needless to say, it is closed to cars, and strolling through the picturesque lanes is a pleasure.

A very interesting Venetian castle of an impressive history. Most of the Venetian Castello of this type in the Cycladic islands and other places in Greece are uninhabited and represent archaeological places of interest. The Kastro of Naxos is inhabited, a living historic town within the contemporary urban complex of the capital town of the island! Visit the cafe of... More

Set within the old town, what differentiates this and makes this better than many of the forts and castles scattered around Greece is that it is still inhabited. The views of the sunset are also spectacular from there.

Well worth the climb to see the views from this fortress - wonderful cafe at the top with panoramic views of the town and surrounding areas. Lovely exhibition area in the fort.

As you walk through the alleys of Old Town and reach the Castle, you can't but feel awe in front of such a dominant site. Touch the walls as you pass them, touch the heavy wooden gates as you cross them, smell the beautiful flowers and plants and, finally, enjoy the beautiful view of Naxos (and somewhere in the back... What a beautifully well preserved area! It's definitely worth a visit while in Naxos. No visit would be complete without a look-see.

We visited the old town and castle in a couple of hours, it was interesting but not great given we come from a country with such great old buildings, however the view and museums were worth the effort. Wandering around the narrow streets gave you an insight to what it was like and with a coffee stop at the end... More
