Very informative presentation of one of the lesser known Civil War battles. The Museum was arranged in a condensed yet informative sequence. The Battlefield walking tour was well laid out in the chronicle battle sequence. For Civil War enthusiast I would recommend visiting this site.

We saw this on the way home from visiting the DC area. What a beautiful area! Only $10 per person and you get to see so much of history. The front desk gentleman was very helpful and nice. To be able to experience a piece of history such as this was amazing! Well worth the stop!!

This site features two parts. The first is a important museum covering the Battle of New Market and Virginia military history. The museum is administered by the Virginia Military Academy, whose troops featured prominently in the battle. The second is the battlefield itself. It contains a farm house complex there during the battle and a walking tour of about two... More

If you are into Civil War History, this is a great place to visit. The compelling story of the Cadets from VMI marching up there to hold off the Union Army is very impressive. The walk from Lexington is a long one. The battlefield is well preserved and you can visualize easily what happened there. We worth the trip though... More

Visited on a rainy day so we did not get to enjoy the entire experience of walking the New Market battlefield. The museum is very well done and honors the fallen VMI cadets during the battle. A must see if you are in the area.

This site is just down from the Battlefield Museum in New Market, Va, just off I-81. It is open to the public as a national park which commemorates the May 1864 Battle of New Market during the American Civil War. If you're a history buff - especially a Civil War enthusiast - you owe it to yourself to stop and... More

It is easy to overlook New Market State Historical Park in New Market, Virginia, because the Civil War battle that was fought there in 1964 doesn't compare to Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Antietam, Shiloh, Chancellorsville or Petersburg. But the site of the one-day battle in which a small Confederate army that included the corps of cadets from Virginia Military Institute in nearby... More

Don't miss this! We included it on our recent trip even though it was out of the way. Very touching place. We toured the Bushong farmhouse and also walked under the interstate to see the rest of the battlefield (really cool). The tour maps are spot on. This is not a big place and you can get through it in... More

A superbly laid out museum filled with exhibits, coupled with an outstanding film, lead to an emotional experience that will be of interest to any person interested in the effects of war in general and the Civil War in particular. As in many other such sites the battlefield today requires a lot of imagination to envision what it might have... More

The 1864 one-day battle for control of the Shenandoah Valley featured a badly led Union Army (under Gen. Franz Sigel) and Confederate forces led by former Vice President (under Pres. Buchanan) Gen. John C. Breckenridge. The site is administered by Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, VA, after the land was purchased by a VMI alumnus. The visit is worthwhile... More
