The Mount Vernon estate of George and Martha Washington is maintained meticulously by a private foundation. The grounds are stunning. Have to admit that we did not stand in the hour long line to go into the mansion itself (which I heard is a typical wait) but seeing the other parts of the estate give you just as much of... more

The Mount Vernon estate is simply a must see if you are in this area. Plan on at least half a day, although you could easily spend the whole day here if you choose to go to the visitors center. I promise that you will learn something about George Washington that you did not know. The property will remind you... more

Mount Vernon was the beloved home of George and Martha Washington from the time of their marriage in 1759 until General Washington's death in 1799. He worked tirelessly to expand his plantation from 2,000 acres to 8,000 and the mansion house from six rooms to twenty one. Mount Vernon is the most popular historic estate in America. Located just 16... more

I was really excited to see the estate, but was a bit disappointed with the tour. It literally felt like like they were herding cattle thru the estate. Instead of getting a designated guide for each group, they have guides in each of the rooms and they just rush you thru the house. You're able to explore the grounds at... more

This is a definite "must see" for everyone! My husband, nine year-old son and I spent a Saturday afternoon at the estate (taking a water taxi down the Potomac) and it was a lovely adventure. History comes to life here! more

and take the kids/grandkids. It is a real "must-see" , completely different from years ago. The museums, films, grounds, house are really the best. Well worth the cost. Meet the reall George Washington. We visited in 2008 and it remains our most memorable vacation (we stayed in Alexandria at the Hilton (which is across the street from the Metro so... more

The new museum at George Washington's beloved Mount Vernon has much to offer the entire family, I love the grounds/gardens/home/farm/barns, but what made the day for my less easily impressed 10-year-old son was the ($5 extra) National Treasure tour. In the Disney movie (Nicolas Cage) National Treasure 2, Ben lures the president of the United States into the basement of... more

Want to make history come alive? Try Mt. Vernon Estate and Gardens. My husband and I enjoyed touring the estate this summer...what a gorgeous place. Be sure to include the tour of his home...the life of George Washington really becomes real. To think we were standing in the dining room where he entertained the likes of Thomas Jefferson, and saw... more

I was visiting a friend in the DC area and wanted to do something outside the normal "touristy" activities. She suggested Mt. Vernon since she hadn't been there since she was young. We spent the entire afternoon wandering around the grounds and learning about the history of the plantation. Well worth your trip out there! more

We have visited Mt. Vernon twice now - both times with an 11 year old child. The way the estate tour is arranged it is easy to customize your experience based on your interests and energy level. Our most recent trip (April 2009) we took the National Treasure II tour. Very well done and great fun. Wear comfortable shoes. Lots... more
