I understand that some people actually use this ferry for a daily commute. But we've only taken it for the sheer pleasure of the ride there and back. In truth, as far as I can see, there is nothing on the other side. But the novelty of an operating ferry - which has been there forever - makes the trip... More

It's a cable ferry and the crossing only takes 5 min., but it's a wonderful break from the constant humm of tires on concrete. I used to take I-81 and I-70 driving from my home in W.Va. to visit my Mom in Maryland but now I ALWAYS take the ferry if it's running. (Check their facebook page -- the ferry... More

$8 roundtrip ($5 one way) for a car, limited parking on the Virginia side, and the fact that Point of Rocks is only 15 miles north all count against the ferry for motorists looking to cross. However, if you are a pedestrian the cost is $1 each way and a cyclist $2 each way. Crossing is quick (about 10 minutes... More

Within the boundaries of Loudoun County, VA, there are only 2 ways across the Potomac to Maryland: Point of Rocks Bridge and White's Ferry. White's Ferry is a fun way to get across the river if you are not pressed for time. It is always a big hit with the kids, because it is (nowadays) so unique. As other reviewers... More

This is really not an "outing", it's more of a different mode of transportation. If you are traveling from Maryland (Frederick area) to Virginia (northern Leesburg ) or vice versa it is a "quaint" way to travel. It costs about $5 each way. Some people use it as part of their commute. If the weather is bad or there has... More

White's Ferry is an old, cable ferry and a unique connection to a past long gone. While it's not the height of excitement to cross the Potomac on a ferry, it's an unusual experience that hard to find elsewhere.

take the time to enjoy the road again. Ride across the river, relax, you might even see a bald eagle swooping done to catch its pry out of the river.

We went to Leesburg recently from Silver Spring and made the mistake of taking the Beltway around to the incredibly congested roads in Northern Virginia. Going back, we took White's Ferry into Maryland, and the difference was night and day. While not a great deal shorter time wise, it was a thousand times more pleasant to take the ferry and... More

Why wouldn't you take this ferry? Quick and easy, and a real time-saver. Short ride, but at night when the moon shines on the river, it's five minutes of charm at a reasonable price. Made me smile.

Never been on a ferry? So you can make it out there to go. Sometimes find it closed (mostly in the winter) real people run this thing and they need to sleep too. Open to bikes, vehicles of all kinds and pedestrians. Don't speed through Poolesville getting there or away from there (youll get a ticket!) Its fun to see... More
