In our new Sunday regimen of a drive to lunch/brunch and a favorite attraction, Mrs Too and I crossed the Potomac River aboard the Gen. Jubal A. Early at Historic White’s Ferry in nearby upper Montgomery County, Md. We have done this many times in the past, once even trailing our Rockwood pop-up camper. There always seems to be some... More

The only ferry remaining on the upper Potomac river. Travel where people crossed the Potomac River in the 1800's. A ferry attached to cable, pushed by diesel. Holds 24 cars. Can be a short cut for some traversing parts of MD an VA, or just enjoy a drive through the a countryside. Stop to see remains of the C&O canal... More

We tried the ferry as an alternative to the Beltway back to Vienna, VA from Maryland. It worked fine, even on a weekend when we suspected there might be a long wait. We were pleasantly surprised when the wait was only about 10 minutes. The ferry is not a major attraction, taking only about 10 minutes to cross a peaceful... More

We have relatives who live in Maryland fairly close to the ferry. We live in Virginia between Dulles Airport and Leesburg. We can either take the toll road to I-495 to I-270 North or take Route 15 to White's Ferry. The latter is a MUCH prettier ride and and quicker as well. For occasional trips or on weekends it's a... Yes its just a ferry ride and takes 10 mins or less to cross the Potomac..Having said that, this place is so beautiful and a really fun way to cross the river and explore the other side... the banks on both sides offer excellent viewing areas with shady trees... We went there on a weekday and it was very quite... More

There aren't many ferries like this left around the U.S., and this brief ride is always fun for the whole family. It also happens to be the only way to conveniently get across the river north of the American Legion bridge just outside of DC.

I've been to White's Ferry dozens of times since the 1970's and the beauty, history, and Ferry drivers are worth every minute that you spend there. I would suggest you read up on the history beforehand. It is fascinating!

This cuts off time, but it moves slowly. It is an experience. The pragmatic saving of time is enough to keep it going. But digging into the history makes it an interesting trip.

We used the ferry regularly for years taking our children back and forth from Maryland every other weekend. You can pack a lunch and eat on the Maryland side where there is picnic tables and a small convenience store. I think the fare is about $6 each way. Our kids always thought it was cool that we drove the car... More
