They have done an excellent job in furnishing and providing interpretive signs to tell the fascinating story of this tavern, Civil War hospital, train hotel, and private home. We had children through retirees in our group, and all enjoyed.

I would highly recommend this museum. There is no guided tour of the hotel but the lady who sold our tickets did a very thorough job of explaining the history. In each room of the two story hotel there are detailed explanations of the particular uses of the room and also of things in the room. Your tour can take... More

I was raised on the Civil War with a history teacher for a father and a park historian brother. We stopped at this small privately run museum on a weekend trip and were presently surprised. Each room is devoted to a different part of the building's history. Interesting artifacts and displays are part of the self guided tour. The staff... More

We visited this museum as part of the Virginia Home and Garden tour. If you like Civil War history this place is a must see. What served as a hotel for railroad passengers became a hospital during the war. The history of the hospital, the artifacts and displays focus on the medical care of the soldiers which the squeamish may... More

Well preserved piece of history presented in an easy to see format. Easy access to exhibits and the building is in immaculate condition. The staff is dedicated and passionate about history. A great way to spend a couple of hours.

The Exchange Hotel and Civil War Museum is an interesting small museum in the small town of Gordonsville. Originally a hotel where passengers exchanged between two railroad lines, it became a major military hospital during the Civil War. It has numerous historic artifacts and displays mostly about its hospital days. It also served freed slaves after the war. There were... More

We visited near to closing and the curator was able to spend time giving us a lot of information. This is the 15th "most haunted" building in the country. He shared photos and recordings of a variety of of paranormal events. The building is full of history and the restoration of each room is something to see. Pictures were allowed,... More

Very interesting historic hotel that has been restored and made into a civil war museum. My wife and I visited at Halloween this past fall. There are rumors that it is haunted and while I am not into the haunting stuff it was definitely a little creepy. Could be because my wife had me taking pictures of everything looking for... More

Lots of history here. You start out in the gift shop, where we paid the fee and were given an overall explanation about the history of the building. The rest is self guided as you go from room to room. Well laid out, well marked with lots of stuff to read and artifacts. The woman in the gift shop was... More
