Built in 1936, The State Theatre operated as a popular movie until the late 1980's. The first film shown was Thanks A Million starring Dick Powell and on November 27, 1988 the State closed its doors after a final showing of Die Hard starring Bruce Willis. The first theatre on the East Coast to be centrally air-conditioned, the State was the flagship of the family-owned Neighborhood Theatres chain which also operated, among others, the Glebe (now a Duron paint store), the Buckingham (now a Post Office) and the Jefferson (now a Chile's restaurant). A multi-million dollar restoration in the late 1990's turned it into the Washington Metro area's favorite new venue for live music and private events. The full theatrical stage is original, as are the 200 balcony seats and both lobbies. The theatre seats on the main floor were removed to allow for the re-design of the auditorium which now accommodates full service dining, standing and dancing areas and two full service bars. The restoration also added a full service restaurant for dining and catering private events.

Used to come here as a teen to see movies, even sat in the same balcony that is still in use. I have seen many music acts here and you can get as close as you want to the stage. Love that there is room to dance, or stand around. The booze is reasonably priced.

Starts at the door where people who are 20 years old and younger are assessed a "security fee" because they have to hire more staff "to monitor" such pre-criminals. And the experience goes down hill from there.

Attended the Psychedelic Furs concert here. Paid extra for a table. The band and the concert were great, however, venue "management (read, hardly any...)" allowed anyone to stand where ever they wanted to without regard for others in attendance at tables or elsewhere. People came and stood in front of us even though we had paid more for a table...they... More

A bunch of friends and I went to The State Theatre for a Legwarmers concert, and it seemed like just your average music venue, nothing special. I definitely got a big 1960s vibe from this place, especially in the lobby and entry area. It just seems really old. Irrespective of the concert I was going to, there seem to be... More

Love this place for concerts. Nice big dance floor that is always hopping. Great brews on tap. The food leaves a lot to be desired, it's just basic bar food, but if you're not super picky it's certainly acceptable.

Went for the Tommy Castro show; I could not understand any of the vocals. Vocals on the follow-up show, Marcia Ball, were much better. Bought a Guinness, but it was funky.

We love this place. Just wish they occassionally had more mainstream acts here. Have been here repeatedly for Ska shows (The English Beat, The Selector) and I love that they have cabaret here. Keep it coming State Theatre!

We have been here several times to see shows, mostly The Machine. We call ahead to reserve a table which cost an extra $10 for two people and a promise to spend $10 each on food. Usually a good deal, except if you get a certain table. Our last visit, we were seated at this certain table that we do... More

I go to The State Theatre every Sunday morning for the 11:00 am service of the Surge Community Church. The bands are outstanding and provide praise to God and leave you with such love in your heart. There is always a good lesson provided by the pastor and assistant pastor, you always leave with new knowledge of the Bible and... More
