We are a floating classroom, a research vessel with HANDS-ON FEET-WET lessons. One of the many things we do is get off the boat on the sandbars to go DIG IN THE MUD FOR CLAMS. Maybe we can catch some to eat. Then it's back on the boat to cruise to a crabbing spot where you will Pull CRAB-POTS on board to identify and see the days catch. If you have the courage I will teach you how to HOLD A CRAB without getting pinched. Navigating our way to Shell Island Beach, we stop and get off the boat for some SHELL COLLECTING than back on the boat for Capt. Barry's favorite activity... hunting for jellyfish. we will then HAUL in the trawler net and will see that it is full of Marine life and sea creatures.... this is always a challenge! Time to slow the boat down to enter the shallow waters.... how many birds can you identify? we use all of our senses-SOUND,TOUCH,TASTE and SMELL- to make our cruises informative and fun. They are is never any pressure always lots of fun.. you can relax, sit back on the boat and be the official photographer, or you can get into it. This is the real deal to get your hands dirty and feet wet so you will experience the life of a Chincoteague Waterman. « less

Captain Barry's Back Bay Cruise was excellent!!! Far exceed our expectations. The cruise was both fun and educational. The adults had as much fun and learned just as much as the kids. The hands on experience is excellent for children and something which will be remembered for a lifetime. The experience on the cruise was one of the main highlights... More

Captain Barry is unbelievable. He is a true "Eco-Tour" pioneer and after so many years remains enthusiastic and full of energy! We decided to take his tour on day #1 of our week on the island to really connect with the pulse of the place and he delivered. The kids were a little skittish at first but by the end... More

I can't even imagine a trip to Chincoteague without going on one of Captain Barry's tours! It was the best two hours we spent on the island! Our family of four included parents, daughter and grandmother. and I'm not sure which one of us enjoyed it the most. We not only had fun, but everyone learned so much about the... More

I can't say enough wonderful things about this tour!!!!! This was the whole family's favorite part of our trip to Chincoteague (the 8 year-old through grandmother inclusive)! It was like nature's amusement park! We learned, we laughed, and we enjoyed the laid back atmosphere! It's shocking how much life is hiding in plain sight! I, personally, made four new friends... A trip to Chincoteague is not complete without a Captain Barry cruise! We have been on many over the years. My husband and I first discovered him 18 years ago on our honeymoon, and had so much fun on our first cruise that we booked several more during our stay! Now we take our kids there every few years, and... More

We met Capt. Barry at 8:00AM this morning for our cruise. It was our last full day in Chincoteague and I think I was more excited than our kids (18 & 11) since they were not happy to be walking up so early! Capt. Barry greeted us with a smile and welcomed us aboard. The next two hours were fun... More

We were fortunate to be guests on Captain Barry's Back Bay Cruises this past week, right during the amazing 89th annual Pony Penning week! My daughter is 6 1/2 and pretty skittish around bugs & squirmy things (as is her mom ;-)). Captain Barry had her touching crabs, jellyfish, fish and even a bird! I can't begin to thank him... More

This was the second year we came down to see Captain Barry - my now 4 yr old son myself and his grandmother all loved it. We learn so much about the bay and my son gets to touch and have hands on-learning rather than learning on a computer.

The tour was a fantastic family friendly adventure! Captain Barry was entertaining and made learning about the bay enjoyable. The kids loved the tour and had lots of fun the entire 2 hours. The parents had as much fun as the kids. Our 10 year old son said, "This is a stop and smell the roses experience!"

LOVED IT!!! My kids loved it and I loved it, every minute of it!!! The 2 hour long trip felt like a few minute trip. If we ever come back we are doing this again, you can never learn too much :)
