The four of us and another family of four traveled on the 4-12 passenger vessel. The captain and mate we knowledgeable about the history and natural features of the area. They explained about the ponies, about shell fishing, and the other local wildlife.

My friend and I had Shane from Assateague Explorer take us on a kayak trip and we had such a pleasant time paddling around the bay taking in the peace and quiet and talking with Shane who has an interesting family connection to Assateague and is very knowledgeable about the bay and it's wildlife. We actually watched a juvenile Bald... More

We kayaked with the Assateague Explorer on July 11. While there was rain earlier in the day, it cleared just before we put in and the weather was beautiful. We kayaked into the island via a meandering stream and saw a variety of birds and wildlife. We were fortunate to observe about half of the herd and portaged our kayaks... More

The boat ride was pleasant, and the captain was friendly and knowledgeable. He told some really interesting tales. It was disappointing that we didn't see any ponies or dolphins. We did see a few birds and some clam beds.

Do not waste your time/money. We took an afternoon cruise looking for a change of pace and some new opportunities to see the ponies. What we got was an uneventful boat ride with one faraway glimpse of ponies and a lot of misinformation (or perhaps it's just the conflict between Maryland/the parks service's approach and the Chincoteague approach). Even accounting... More

I took the sunset kayak tour. The guide tried to make an informed decision about which direction would allow us to see horses. We quietly paddle through a tiny creek & got a fantastic view of the horses. They were nearly close enough to touch. Entire trip was pleasant & the guide was informed & skilled. Toward the two hour... More

We took this cruise on a rainy, windy afternoon. The boat was equipped with ponchos which was really nice. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable regarding the area. My boys and I gained a new appreciation for Assateague and Chincoteague.

I purchased this tour for my family as an alternative to the annual pony swim as we had young children in the group. After communication from Assateague letting us know that our original date would likely not be ideal to see the ponies we switched to later in the week. I had to follow-up twice to confirm the new date... More

One word- AMAZING!!! We were literally had wild ponies sniffing our kayak, not sure how I could have asked for anything more. There were elderly people as well as young children on this trip as well, so don't feel like you need to be in great shape for the trip. I would also say that the water is less than... More

First off, the trip deals with nature so it is not prequalified or guaranteed. My daughter, her friend and I had a wonderful experience. The crew, especially First Mate Samantha, were very knowledgeable and hospitable. Yes,we didn't walk up to the ponies and touch them but remember they are "wild" creatures. It was a blessing to see them and also... More
