Wonderful place to visit. The visitor center is terrific for the whole family, the volunteer was amazing and knowledgeable about the NWR and whole eastern shore. We enjoyed the trails, walking through the bunker and being in nature overall. Next time we will bring our kayaks! There is a boat launch with restroom and parking for $10 at the end... More

Went to the national reserve, lots of people surf fishing and catching fish. Salt water fishing license $10.00 for 10 days. Buy before you go. Also has trolly that runs at 0900 and returns at 1pm.

Part history part nature, great blend of both here. Take a walk down the butterfly path to wind up at a WW2 relic. Go further on the path for the overlook and see the shoreline from the stair top overlook! Great for families of all ages.

We rented a kayak from Southeast Expeditions in Cape Charles and explored the refuge. It was a great, relaxing way to spend the day. We went out to a deserted little island and spent about an hour exploring before we headed back. The staff at Southeast Expeditions were pleasant and helpful.

First visit to the Wildlife Refuge. It is a beautiful place. Walked to the edge of the marsh to see the distant view of the Cape Charles Lighthouse.

But couldn't find picnic tables anywhere. Probably great for the beach...we were hoping to see the ponies.

I like this relatively small refuge. Of course, it has a great boat launch, but a bit expensive. It has very interesting fortifications under the dunes where large gun emplacements used to be housed. It has pleasant nature walks that go out of a nice wetlands overlook and past a legacy graveyard. Its especially nice to kayak in the wetlands... More
