Ila Loetscher, the "Turtle Lady of South Padre Island", originally formed our organization to save the Kemp's ridley sea turtle in 1977. Now we are a sea turtle hospital with a mission to rehabilitate and release any injured sea turtles, increase awareness concerning their safety and habitat, and assist with conservation efforts for all sea turtle species. We are funded by donations, grants and gift shop proceeds-- For rehabilitated sea turtle and hatchling release text message notifications, please see our website membership page. This is a great place for kids to see the turtles that are being saved. Some of them have been injured with boats. Ninety per cent of the turtles rescued, are returned to the ocean when they are rehabilitated.

This was a small place right across the street from our condo. Price of admission by donations. Several tanks with turtles in various stages of rehabilitation. One permanent resident had a prosthesis to help her swim with only one flipper. Most of the turtles are returned to the wild so the small tanks are just temporary, but they seemed small... More

This place was really neat. It's not the big, but that's almost part of it's charm. There are a bunch of tanks where rescued sea turtles are held until they're released back into the wild. The goal is to return all the turtles to the while. It doesn't feel commercialized or touristy - more like you're getting a behind the... More

This place is very small but well worth the visit. These people are so dedicated and care about these injured turtles and educating the public.

Dedicated group of interns, volunteers and donors trying to rescue injured turtles in the Gulf. Nice educational session about the various types of turtles and the increased risk of plastic bags in the water

It was great to be able to visit this turtle rescue operation. Good work being done by these caring people. Very interesting to see how injured turtles can be cared for and, in many cases, be returned to the sea once recovery is complete. Very educational. While no fee is charged, a voluntary donation is appreciated.

This is a "must do "experience for a visitor to SPI. It is amazing to see what care the staff is giving to one of the most endangered sea species.

This organization does a fantastic job in helping Turtles. The history of the Sea Turtle Inc. can be seen at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. A visitor needs to do both or the visit to South Padre is not complete. The turtles that are recovering are real hams to the visitors waving and coming to the edge... More

It was neat to see the rescued sea turtles and learn a little more about them. Who would of thought we would have prosthesis's for sea turtles.
