My wife and I enjoyed the small walkway located beside the Conference Centre. We were able to see flamingos, egrets, red winged blackbirds, humming birds, gulls, and several others we could not identify. The walkway is quite short, consisting of two arms extending less than 1/4 mile in total. It would be suitable for children and seniors looking for a... More

Located just south of the SPI Convention Center, with parking at the Convention Center, this complex of raised, wooden walking trails take you over the tidal area of the Laguna Madre.

What is not to like, it is free. Saw egrets, several great blue herons and pink flamingos. Cool. A nice way to spend an hour.

I enjoyed this boardwalk very much, and seeing the whaling wall up close. Some may be confused as this walkway is very close to the birding centers boardwalk, this part of the boardwalk is free, such a peaceful way to spend some time and see some interesting birds & other nature. I do suggest paying the nominal fee next door... More

A free wooden walk way and a good place to see birds especially waders. There is a very large alligator living there and something to see if you are lucky.

see also "Birding Center"--a different, adjacent fee-required site This boardwalk, called the Laguna Madre Nature Trail is the original SPI boardwalk. It is still free. Park on the Convention Centre driveway, just past the building with the big mural. The two arms of the boardwalk give good views of the wetlands for wading birds spoonbill, ibis, heron, night-heron, egret, and... More

Got to see the Convention Center, the Whaling Wall, and Do the Nature Trail/Boardwalk. I love the peaceful brook there for tired birds and saw several species in the water, fairly close up, while on the boardwalk. I plan on visiting again, very soon.

Loved the quiet walk out into the bay. Signs were very helpful. A beautiful little memorial garden. I did not like seeing another walk way that did not connect coming from the birding center. This seemed like a complete waste of resources and invasive to the environment. Not sure who is to blame but shame on the convention center and... More

It was a very interesting walk. Saw lots of different birds and other creatures. I would most definitely do this walk in the morning if visiting SPI in the summer or warmer months.

Every year while visiting SPI we go to the birding center. We always have plenty of nature to look at. I especially like a certain heron that chases his dinner around the shallow water. This year we waited until the last day and the wind was fierce and the temperature had dropped very low. We almost did not venture out,... More
