Not much to the park but plenty of wildlife to watch and enjoy. The deck is big and has plenty of info on the local inhabitants. Some good trails for biking and close enough to Brownsville to make it worth the visit.

Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park offers activities mainly for campers, trail-hikers, and birders. Keep in mind, the entire park is completely flat and that there aren't even hills located within the park grounds. There is a pretty sweet tower in the south end of the park that gives you a pretty decent view of the park and Mexico. I used... More

This is an interesting park. Lots of trails and areas to explore. Birds need to be 'worked for" as there aren't a lot of feeders and wetlands. Has a wonderful hawk-watching tower and is a fine place to be during the migration. As with other parks and refuges in the area there is a cadre of staff and volunteers that... More

This vast park is a great place to spend some time looking for birds in the large expanse of natural habitat.

Limited wetlands. No longer has campers with feeders. All feeders were empty midday. Limited variety. Difficult to view river and look for kingfishers. Tram was quite crowded and only runs once per hour.

In McAllen for the weekend for a wedding. What to do before/after wedding festivities? Where to go? McAllen is South Texas flat. A border town near the Gulf of Mexico with a prevalence of Border Patrol. More Spanish than English. It turns out that McAllen is a destination for bird watching. Many migrating species whose migratory patterns make the Rio... More

Arrived at dawn and had an early morning walk. Entry is on the honor system if you arrive before gate opens. Staff was very knowedgeable and enthusiastic to provide information on the area. This is a wonderful park for birding and I can't wait to visit again.

Arrived at seven a.m. To the riotous sounds of joyfully waking birds. Paid at honor box, hiked a couple hours before first tram. Hikers, campers, bikers, birders, all enjoying a park full of birds not seen elsewhere. Cannot wait to go back. Helpful, friendly staff and volunteers full of good information. Very good gift shop.

State Park and World Birding Center, well kept with a very nice visitor center, bicycle rental or bring your own, great flat surface bike riding with no cars allowed, trolley service to birding stations and hiking trails. Daily pass $5.00 per person, primitive tent camping only, no privacy in camping area if other campers are there.
