This structure is the only surviving example from the 17th century, constructed in 1628. Comedies were performed here during the Spanish Golden Age. Corrals were banned in the 18th century, many such places falling into disuse. The city bought the structure in 1954. It is again used as a theater. It hosts every July the International Classical Theater Festival. For its historic role, it has apparently been nominated by Spain to be a World Heritage Site. Good luck!

The Corral de Comedias is a restored theatre from the 16th Century. The visit costs 3€ and takes around 15-20 minutes. You take your audioguide at the entrance and walk in to the small auditorium, seeing the theatre as the public would have seen it 4 centuries ago.

The guide takes you through the history of the theatre and the differences between theatre in Spain - where women were permitted to be actors, if married to the playwright or administrator - and that of other counties where such things were strictly forbidden. This is used to guide you through some of the famous scandals of the old theatre.

Although the similarities with a theatre such as Shakespeare's Globe in London are obvious in the construction with the great wooden beams and simple structure, there are also interesting differences: it is the now standard rectangular shape rather than round; the private boxes for the authorities are above the stage, left and right but, like Shakespeare's Globe, this theatre is still in use.

You work your way up, to the first and second floor, getting the view that the patrons would have had over the balustrade just below the canvas that now serves as a roof.

There really is a sense of stepping back in history through the visit.

Small rectangular area with multi level balconies with chairs. The local is clean, well maintained. I don’t think it is worth it to pay an entrance.

As the only open air theatre in Spain we decided to visit it . Unfortunately we could only buy a ticket for the theatre and the convent at 5 euros and with only 30 mins to see both before the 2 pm closing time. Waiting until 5 pm for them to both reopen. Not to miss the opportunity we paid for our entry to see the theatre as that was why we had called into this town on our way to Toledo. Quite impressive and amazingly restored for continual use. Disappointingly we couldn’t use the other half of our tickets but did attempt to view the Palacio which we were told was free to enter… however it had closed early .. and isn’t free. But hey it’s sunny Spain.

It was brilliant ! Amazing to know that this place is still kept and used to this date.
Audio guide gives you enough info but I wish I was there to see the actual show.I must come back to see the theatrical work in the festival.

This open air theatre was built in1680 in the Golden Age and is the only one of its kind left in Spain. The entrance fee includes an audio guide which is most entertaining and informative. It is like stepping back in time and one can imagine the events taking place. During the summer months plays are presented on Saturday evenings - we were very sorry that our knowledge of the Spanish language was not sufficient for us to buy a ticket.

The Corral de Comedias is a little jewel of architectural history set in the high plains of Spain. Anyone interested in theater or old buildings will enjoy a look 'round this simple place. Almagro has a treasure here, but it could do so much more with it, especially for its foreign visitors.
We took the "theatricalized tour" at 7 p.m., wherein two costumed performers leaped and shouted and acted like mad, explaining as they went how the space is divided up according to the class and gender of the audience members. We are fluent Spanish speakers, but still had trouble following the dialog. Children in the audience were less-than capivated, as well... We would have done better to take the Audioguide tour (if there's an English option) or just attend one of the many "real" plays offered at the theater.

The only theater of the Spanish Siglo de Oro that still exist. A frozen piece of history that is possible to visit.
The audioguide is quite informative.

A truly astonishing original 16th century theatre. Very atmospheric. We were able to walk around the whole place, back stage as well. A steal at 3 euros. Almagro a very interesting and beautiful town, well worth a visit.
